Ate enables you to easily track your daily meals and associated emotions. Instead of counting calories, it focuses on how meals make you feel. It is non-judgmental and visual. It augments your self-awareness so you can find and stay on your path to a livable and balanced lifestyle.
It’s a tracker that people actually love to use!
“I just wanted to let you know that since I started using your app I have lost 30lbs. I have tried MANY different things to lose weight (counting calories, macros, different diets) but I have found that this is the only thing that has helped me. So I wanted to thank you very much!” - from Christina
“This app changed everything for me! I’ve lost 9 pounds so far, am absolutely not on a diet, do not feel deprived, and have never eaten better! Having to take a picture of everything I eat greatly encourages me to choose colorful, healthy options, pay more attention to portion sizes, and to think twice about whether I really want to eat something. It’s also very reinforcing to look back at my food choices and feel proud of them. I love this app!” - PH
"I LOVE this app! I was looking for something exactly like this because I can’t be bothered to enter calories or even (or even search for) food descriptions. All I needed was something to make me be aware of what I was eating, and to record whether it was on the path or not. You have made it so easy and it’s really helping me every day! Please never change it. It’s perfect!!" - Phil

Why food journaling?
It’s the first tool that experts recommend to their clients who are interested in achieving a balanced lifestyle. It helps with self-awareness, without being judgemental in any way. It helps us understand our current behaviors and maybe surface some we were not even aware of.
How does it work?
Ate helps you quickly capture your meal before you eat. With a few simple taps, you can keep notes about your meal and learn about your hunger cues. You’ll soon realize how food affects your day-to-day activities and performance in and out of the office. Ate helps track the time of your meal and the time between meals. If you are starving by lunchtime, you can see what you had earlier. Maybe you didn’t eat the right food to fuel you throughout the morning. Ate helps you connect the dots to understand your mood and energy!
Ate also helps you capture what you drink. Tracking water, coffee, alcohol, juice or soda consumption has never been this easy. It puts everything on a visual timeline with your meals so you can better understand your habits. [Premium]
Don’t forget about physical activities you do! Not only is it an important part of your overall health, but it can also have a significant impact on your appetite. [Premium]
Ate is your personal health journal. On its own it enhances your mindfulness and self-awareness. If you choose, it can be shared with your coach, nutritionist, or close friends for additional motivation.
We have recently changed our name to ate from YouAte. Some users found the “You” part a bit judgy, and we just can’t have that.
Ate’s core features are free to use and will stay free. We do offer a premium membership that will unlock features such as Custom Q/As, Liquid and Activity tracking, the ability to share your profile via the web and to reuse your favorite photos when saving a meal. You can sign up for monthly, quarterly and yearly auto-renewing plans.
Processing of a subscription is handled by Apple. Your credit card will be charged through your iTunes account when you confirm your purchase. Subscription renews automatically at the same price unless canceled at least 24 hours before the end of the subscription term. You can manage subscriptions in Account Settings in iTunes after purchase. Refunds will not be provided for any unused portion of the subscription term.
**Announcement: our new name is: ate**
We decided to drop the “You” from “YouAte” because it had some negative connotations. Bit pointy, a bit judging. And we don’t need that in our lives.
Swipe left on the “Share your Day” image to show meal descriptions or answers to your mindful questions over each associate meal image. You can find them both under the new Day Recap view.
Share it on Instagram, tag it with #ateapp and we will reshare it in our Instagram Story.
Or share it on Facebook with your tribe.
We think you will love it!
We have also added a new experimental feature: Save the location of your meals. Basically, we take your current location and attach it to the meal you just saved. We plan to use this in a search/map feature we are considering adding. We are also open to other ideas you might have. Anyway, we wanted to give you a chance to start saving that data while we figure out what to do with it. It’s turned off by default and we will not share it with anyone. So if you want to start saving location, you have to enable it in settings.
We have also added daily step counts and activity rings from Apple Health to the Day Recap view for our Premium users.
If you feel that ate is having a positive impact on your life, please give us a quick 5-star rating in the app store and maybe share some of your story, if you have time. It would mean a lot to us. Thanks!

We added full VoiceOver support for our visually impaired users. We are super excited to have them on ate and looking forward to their feedback on what else we can improve on.
Ratings and Reviews
Exactly what I was looking for!
I love this app! I wanted a food diary thing, but don’t want to track calories or even type in every teaspoon of oil I use to cook my dinner. I love that I can quickly type something in, and the photo aspect is unexpectedly great! It’s quick to snap a picture and it motivates me to add things like fruit and vegetables to my plate since I’m visually more apt to notice that I’m skipping them and just eating a sandwich or a piece of toast. I also like the freedom to change what is “on path” for me - since it’s not specific to one type of eating. I really love the little arrow that encourages me to make a healthier choice for my next meal if I do go off path - it’s not judgy and unlike other things I’ve tried, I don’t tend to feel like I’ve “ruined” a day with one meal or food, so I’m more likely to just move on and eat something that is better for me at the next meal rather than derail and start again the next day (or week or whatever!). Thanks for such a helpful tool!
Developer Response ,
Thank you so much! Appreciate the kind words. Photos do make a huge difference. When you add notes to your meal, you can also dictate it which makes it super easy to add some quick description of the meal and any other thoughts you feel like sharing. To dictate, just hit the little microphone icon on the keyboard. Enjoy your path!
Perfect for my needs
I have downloaded every meal tracker app available on the App Store it seems, but nothing was exactly what I was looking for in till I found ate. I just need a simple place where I can write down or take a picture of what I’m eating, which is enough to keep me “on path” without the stress of calorie counting, trying to search a weird database for what I ate, entering the exact quantities of what I ate, or having to report to a health coach. The design of this app is pleasing, it’s easy to use, I like the questions they ask you after your meal so you can reflect on whether you made a good choice or not and why. I’m grateful to the makers of this app for understanding that not everybody wants to spend their entire life counting calories, even if we still want to be healthy. Thank you! I am strongly considering a subscription, but the free version has everything that I really need, so don’t let that scare you off from downloading it :)
Aid to mindful eating
I’ve tried zillions of diets and apps over the years, losing weight fast or slow, but usually gaining it back. I’m convinced that the only way to achieve and maintain a healthy weight is by being mindful of what you’re eating, how much you’re eating, and when you’re eating.
The ate app is a great aid to being mindful. Prompts, adjustable for the times you usually eat, nudge you to not only look at your plate but take a picture to remember. You don’t have to do anything right then, just capture the image and decide if it’s “on path” or not. You decide the path, you decide if it’s what you want, no outside rules, no calorie counting, just a quick pic and on-path or not decision, then eat.
You’re prompted after a bit to review your meal, which is where the mindfulness comes in. You get to reflect on what you ate, where, with whom, and how your meal made you feel. Again, no harping or hard work, no scolding, just you reflecting on your meal. This mindfulness seems to magically curb what you’ve been doing and guide you to think about your food and what that means to your weight.
You can go back and edit your evaluation, add a meal you forgot to grab a picture of with a text description, even share your meal with others if you want.
