Auto-refresh now available: When you buy a new audiobook or one of your subscriptions is updated, Audible now automatically refreshes your library when you open the app.
Excellent technology and experience
You are going to read a lot of reviews here with very few stars. You might realize upon reading them that these users are rating this app based on their lack of trying to figure out what is wrong with their device. Essentially, they rated the app instead of contacting tech support. I encourage you to ignore them.
This app is what devices like the iPhone was invented for. In your hands is hundreds of thousands of books to read. To listen to while working, driving, pooping, whatever! Audiobooks for a lifetime on your pocket-calculator sized telephone. That is phenomenal technology.
The interface is simple and keen to most listeners. A huge play pause button, a skip back 30 seconds button for when you are distracted and missed that last part (and the skip back is instant. Press it multiple times for a longer hop). A bookmark button for tagging those cool moment you will want to come back to some day. It also has a playback speed button for those mutants among is who can enjoy something at 2x speed.
I chose to appreciate the entirety of what Audible represents. That is why i gave it full stars.
Great app with two issues
The audible app is a great way to listen to your audible purchases. The sleep function is great, especially the "End of chapter" option. Access your library directly and download books without using your computer. There are two issue though. First is that the latest couple of versions seem to be crashing fairly often (about once a day). It starts right up again with a click though and since the crashes seem to be UI related at least they don't happen when you are just listening and not playing with the phone. The second issue is a long standing issue with playback via Bluetooth. Most books play back just fine, however a select few (about 10%) will play back with skips or blank audio in places. Even if you rewind and listen again the same audio is dropped. This occurs across multiple BT devices so I am pretty sure it is the app itself or a combination of app & audiobook.
Good books, mediocre app
Less buggy than it uses to be, the app generally works these days, but ultimately offers little more than book playback in it's simplest form. The books can be good (though narrator quality varies), but this is a very mediocre way to go about listening to them.
Some obvious points of improvement: be able to buy new books from the app (seriously, I have to ask for this?); better forward/backward navigation (back 30sec on the remote is far more useful than back one chapter); app chapters should always map to book chapters (suspiciously rare); automatically drop bookmarks whenever you navigate time, to go back to where you were; notes, as with Kindles; sync all data (times, badges, etc) between devices; equalizer, to optimize for voice quality; better sort/search/filter/hide ability for the book list; option to mark old books finished, as the app looses track itself; and book text (for when a narrator is unintelligible, not as a Kindle substitute).
