Good Technology, Poor business model
As a self proclaimed part time audiophile and a huge fan of the vast majority of what Audyssey labs does, it is unfortunate that I too must now give the updated app a negative review.
I normally use the app to listen to music on my Grado SR 225i headphones when I am away from my desktop DAC and it really does improve the quality of their sound output from my phone. To be honest, I wish they had a desktop equalization program, but that's outside the scope of this review.
One day, i fired up the app and was very surprised to find that the headphone profiles I had saved went missing after my phone automatically installed the latest update. I discovered that the paid app now expects users to purchase each headphone profile. While I think it makes complete sense for Audyssey to chase a better return for their incredible headphone profiling, it really disappointed me that they wouldn't let their existing customers keep their saved profiles.
Wouldn't you be upset if you were in Starbucks drinking a cup of coffee that you just purchased and the barista came up to you and tells you that she has to take your coffee back or charge you again because they just brewed a fresh pot?
The bottom line is that it just doesn't seem fair to retroactively penalize customers for a change in direction.
Update: So when am I getting a refund?
Fixed, and Great Once Again
This patch fixed the issues I was having with volume changing. No further problems, and now i can enjoy this app again. Thanks!
Good for some headphones
The app did a really good job with my Etymotic MC5 earbuds. The sound was richer and fuller without diminishing the vocals.
With my Sennheiser PX100 and Grado SR80 headphones, however, the vocals in my music (mostly pop and rock) disappeared behind a wall of sound.
I paid the $1.99 for the earbud profile but will do some more testing (love the 30 minute free trial) before buying the other profiles.
The music player portion of the app is much easier to use than the current version of the Music app, which is bewildering.
