Ratings and Reviews

No haters please

Not sure where all the crying is coming from because this is an excellent app. For those complaining about price, three things. I just signed up for the print version for two years, $18 and comes with the iPad version. Secondly, if you only get the iPad version there are like four ads per issue, hence the $20 price tag. I like how people are naming the price they think is acceptable, like they work at a magazine and have some idea of how much time and effort it takes to put out an issue. Lame. And thirdly, upon signing into my iPad automobile account, I was presented with the option of downloading the past 6 months'(!) issues at no extra charge. Value for money? I think that's a big check.
About the app itself, its beautiful. There are tons of little extras like video, beautiful full screen pictures, and facts that are there if you want and gone if you don't. The best integration of print to iPad though is Robert Cumberfords's grumpy design analysis. Tap on a description and the specific area he's talking (complaining) about is highlighted. Very very cool. Also, the app downloads each story as you read them so the wait time to view an issue is measured in seconds. Very smart.
The only downside i can see is that the issues are a bit big so ill have to eventually delete some off my hard drive. Overall a very very good app. Thank you Automobile!

nicely done

The low reviews for the pricing are not fair to the APP. It's free for magazine subscribers. The account-creation for exising subscribers is a little wonky, but try this: put in your 5 digit zipcode first (without the +4 digits), then go up to account number, then submit. it worked for me and I am now reading current and older issues. Also, it sends a confirmation email to the email associated with your subscription, then you have to open the confirmation email to complete the process (of creating a username/password for the app). I did it all in a few minutes (but I had my subscription reminder complete with my account number in front of me, so that helped). Also, I received the confirmation email on my ipad, so that helped even more. 2 clicks later I was reading this months issue.

The ability to see high res full screen images is a huge plus. Pictures that are little thumbnails in the print magazine are full screen hi res shots. Also the ability to scan through all the available pictures is a really good feature, I thought.

Overall, a good conversion of a print mag to ipad. Don't knock down the rating because of Apples magazine pricing requirements. The paper mag is about $15/year and they give you the app for free. A good deal in my book.

Sad Loss to Automotive Enthusiasts Everywhere

I've subscribed to AM ever since the first issue years ago under the great David A. Davis, Jr. This has long been, in my opinion, the premier automotive enthusiast publication with in-depth reviews, unique perspectives, and intelligent commentary and reporting on the automotive industry. Jean Jennings continued The magazine in the tradition of David A., while adding her own stamp along the way. Then the digital iPad version came along, and great grew into superb with high levels of interactivity at every "turn of the page."

Unfortunately that all ended recently with the firing of most of the staff and the particularly crude destruction of the digital publication, changing it into a cheap scan of the magazine's pages. Wow, what a huge step backward. Now, with iOS8, the app has become entirely unusable. It crashes just a few pages in, and even after a delete and reinstall, it still crashes rendering the app useless.

Ten "The Enthusiast Network?" Fire the people we all have grown to love, take a massive tech step backward by removing any trace of interactivity, and then fail to support the iPad app, or even to address the major crashes that render it useless. You may want to review that word "Enthusiast."
