1st of series has quirks fixed in later versions
I like this whole series (4 so far) a lot. The games have rich illustrations, good dialog, lots of clever and inventive puzzles, few boring hidden object puzzles and lots of scenes that keep you busy for several relaxing hours. And it's nice to play a game that's not entirely dark and creepy. One of the problems, which other reviewers mentioned, is that using the correct inventory items doesn't always work the first time. This was a problem most notably when trying to get the cauldron down in the kitchen. I made about six attempts to place the correct item on it at different areas of the cauldron, but it would't catch. I had to confirm I was right by looking at a walkthrough, and eventually it worked. Another annoyance was the fairy hints. She kept pointing to hints for things I already saw, not for something that would help me progress from where I was, making her rather useless at times. I try not to use hints too often, so when I do, I'd like them to actually be helpful. I also wish the price of $5 for the full version (skip the Collector's version for $2 more) is still a bit too high for a game you can only play once. I'd actually buy more BF games if they were under $3.
Good game so far, though something happened to me that I didn't see specifically mentioned from what I've read here so far. I enjoy adventure games the most, this one has only just begun for me.
Here's what happened: I was interrupted from my game right where you have just cleaned the mirror, I saw the images in the reflection, walked away from the game and it had turned off (or I turned it off?) but when I opened the game to play today, the mirror showed the outside area in the reflection, no images/symbols, fairy no help, no relic. I have shut down the app (by 4finger slide upwards method, pressing/holding app 'til it shakes) and rebooted the iPad (3rd gen.) since the last time this game was played. Glad you allow a restart mid game. I was able to restart with only a little time lost. Hopefully everything will be smooth from here on out.
I did manage to get past the scene since restarting and believe that when I walked away from the iPad before, somehow the game lost the information there, or when I shutdown my apps, and less likely the reboot (because I think shutting down the app would've been enough to reset/end any currently queued, or hanging actions remaining in the game).
Beautiful engaging game with a few flaws
I really enjoyed this game. It had a good mix of puzzles, hidden object and of course just good old ingenuity to figure stuff out. The graphics were good and you could zoom in on Hidden object scenes. The music was pleasant, somewhat repetitive but not annoying. I would find myself getting irritated that I couldn't figure out what to do next so I just put it down, when I came back the next day I always found my way out of where I was stuck. I pride myself on not having to resort to walkthroughs but I did read some reviews where players were saying the game is picky about where you place items, but knowing that I did try multiple areas when I felt an item made sense. At one point I did have to resort to the walkthrough only to discover I did in fact have it right, but still after multiple trys couldn't get the object to work! Finally I persisted and it finally worked. It just shouldn't be that hard to use an item. So the game is not perfect technically but still I got 4.25 hours of fun out of it over a weeklong period. Worth the money just persist on using the items if you think you have it right. (my issue was in the wine cellar for whatever that's worth)
