Optima Backgammon iPhone
This version of backgammon is fun if you like winning a lot. I have Absolute Backgammon on my laptop and can win about half the time. I've rarely lost matches to this version even on the most "difficult" setting. The iPhone player makes poor moves that are way too conservative... And some moves are just downright idiotic. Strategy rarely involves building blocks on the offensive side of the board, and you can count on being able to trap pieces in the iPhone backcourt. Accepting doubles seems to be based entirely on pip count, even when there is no chance of winning. It needs more sophisticated programming and, as pointed out in other reviews, a resign option would be nice.
Very good but...
I have been playing this app for a few years and really enjoy it, but as others mention, when playing on highest difficulty the computer plays a bit smarter, but mostly it just gets better rolls. It also tends to double in unlikely (e.g., even or loosing) scenarios then proceeds to roll multiple sets of high doubles. Thus, if one plays rather conservatively, one can easily beat the computer 2:1 or better.
Suggestions: Please improve the algorithm and logic, and add a feature to quickly end the game when it becomes impossible for one side to win.
I beat the computer 4 out of 5 times but honestly there are only a few moves that I would ever question that computer makes in error. It's just the programmer's style, just like we all have a style. I've played many, many hours on it. It's well worth it. One suggestion to the programmers is that they need to get their chips out the back court (is that what it's called???) so there is no "backgammon" ruled against the computer's score! It's triple points for that.
