Algorithms need a lot of work.
I've enjoyed backgammon for years, and prior to the last release, this was one of the best apps for it, but it does need tweaking. The difficulty level appears to be tied to tweaking the luck aspect of the dice vs actual playing level of the system, when playing against the device. For instance, I've barred the system, and I'm bearing off, yet the system continues to move the near its home, vice moving his pieces out of mine, resulting in a tripling of my win. Just today, I had 12 wins vs 5 for the system, and I put four pieces on the bar. The doubling cube was at 16, and I pulled the triple, giving me a 60 game match. The update to the algorithm on the most difficult setting allows up to 6 back to back rolls of doubles for the system. It also favors barring pieces vice making tactical decisions which are better. This version really lowered the quality of the game in my humble opinion. Please, revisit the tactical part of the game.
Love backgammon and this is a version w/ good graphics. It's enjoyable and the recent update will keep it alive - nice. I find the big rolling 'no valid moves' thing a bit overdone and annoying. Would love to see the algorithm in play here, but since there are no advancing levels or gains of any kind to be won, you just win or lose and the match is over.... I don't get too worried about whether the computer wins more than I do. Because, does it matter? But the computer does seem to have a better connection!
Lying, cheating computer. Gives doubles to itself 4x more!
I thought I had finally found a game that was competitive. The games were closer than any backgammon computer game I had ever played. I was winning about 40% to 50% of the time which made the game more interesting. Then I began to count how many times the computer gave itself doubles compared to me. I observed that the computer gave itself doubles three to four times more than it gave me. That's why I call it, lying cheating computer. Developers: Why not improve the logic inside the game instead of going the easy route and making the algorithm give more of the doubles to the computer?
