Backup Buddy is a small backup application focused on simplicity and ease of use. It bridges the gap between Apple's Time Machine and complex full-featured backup solutions which have dozens of settings.
Just like Time Machine, Backup Buddy will create a chronological archive of your data, each time updating only the changes. But unlike Time Machine, in Backup Buddy you can control exactly what will be backed up as well as when and where the backup will occur. Also you can add multiple backups, each with a different destination.
You can also choose to automatically place your backup data inside a disk image file, which can be very useful in situations where you want to store your data on a network volume that is not Mac-formatted (an SMB server for example).
Some of the key features of Backup Buddy are:
Designed to be simple. No complicated settings; we make all the hard decisions for you.
Gives you full control over the really important stuff: choosing what you want to backup, where you want to save your backup, and when you want the backup to occur.
Creates chronological backups by using hard links to save disk space, just like Apple's Time Machine.
Can save your data inside a disk image, making it easier to safely store your data on non-Mac network volumes.
* Please note that Backup Buddy conforms to Apple's sandboxing guidelines. Therefore, it cannot backup system files, only your personal data.
Ratings and Reviews
Fails in automation prevents ejection
I’m updating this program review and revising my rating to 1 star. Why? Because the author refuses to make updates to fix the disc ejection problem. In addition, I’ve run into another problem wherein this program randomly thinks it can’t access the drive that it’s been backing up to for months. Nothing I do will fix this, so now it’s become a manual only operation. Automation is shot. Why is this field so sparse with good programs? We don’t always want to use Time Machine.
It works great and quite fast I have to say. Better than the others I’ve used in that respect. But the real aggrevation and perhaps a show stopper for some will be the fact that you can’t eject your drive unless you close backup buddy which kind of kills the point of using such a program. (You can type a umount command string in terminal to eject it, but this is a lot of work every time you want to move.) Also, it won’t just run in the background, it has to stay on the task bar or whatever we call it these days. So only a three from me. Should be a two for those two bone headed things, but it functions well enough.
This Program Will Save You
If you are depending on Time Mahcine to keep reliable backups, then you are going to be in for a big surprise when you have to restore files.... I have been an Applie I-Mac user for 15+ years - Time Mahine has failed more times than I care to remember, and so my many backup routines... After the latest time Machine mishap, I decided to get real about backing up necessary files - - And Backup Buddy does it effectively....
I back up my Filemaker Files that I use to run my entire business to the I-Cloud - Every Hour it saves a New Copy that I can rely on - very please with this program!
Perfect scheduled backup!
I got tired of Time Machine backuping up all the time & slowing down my iMac. Backup Buddy is scheduled to backup after my computer turns itself early in the morning before I wake up at 5:30. By the time I need the computer, the backup is done and I can quit BU Buddy & eject my backup drive. This frees up more computing power for me and keeps my BU drive safe while it is off. I schedule my computer to turn off every night & usually manually shut it down. BU Buddy does incremental backups of just the changed items every day. It is simple and intuitive. Just what I need!
