Crashes and lags taint an otherwise incredible experience
Let me just start off by saying that despite the issues, this game was definitely worth the purchase. That's right, all 500 pennies. Even with its problems it's still a decent port of a console game. I loved everything in this game from its story, to its visuals, to its music, and especially Logan Cunninghams epic narration. The man was obviously born for this. After I beat this game, I automatically wanted to play it again, and that is just what I did. If it wasn't for my phones limited storage space and my urge to play other games, I definitely would have completed this game 100%. Sadly, however, there just so many awesome games in the AppStore and so little time. I can only imagine how incredible it must feel to completely conquer Bastion. Yet even with all the praise I can give this game, I just cannot ignore the nuisances caused by its bugs. Like I said earlier, though, I loved this game despite this. And even though it's bugs were irriating, I never once thought to delete the game as an option. I enjoyed it too much in spite of that. In the end, I feel it was worth the money, although if you can't stand bugs, I'd recommend you wait for the next sail.
An interesting approach
I love this game for it's exceedingly high standard of gameplay and expansion. There's no other game I know of that I've come back to play through for the third time like I am now playing Bastion. I'm really disappointed since this came out that there hasn't been much to compete or to even match it since the standard for iPad games now resolves around in-app-purchasing and that's really sad. However, it just makes this game more of a gem.
I realize it's a port from its original PC version. So it's not an original iOS game. That's worthy to note. It doesn't make much difference in the grand scheme of things though. I can't rate it any higher. It has such a vibrant originality and style that leaves most everything else in the dust. The only compliant I had was the lack of real challenge. But the shrine dynamic gave it a perfect spin. You can choose exactly how to make things harder and for more and more rewards. I don't know of any other game that has been designed so brilliantly.
If you've looking to buy a more expansive game for iOS but comparing this and similar titles, get this one. You won't regret it, I promise.
Beautiful Game, Some Bugs
Finding out that this was ported to the iPad was like early Christmas for me, but I had some misgivings due to the reviews that said that the game suffers from severe lag issues. I've about halfway completed the game and only had some minor lag on the Langston River/Prosper Bluff level. Nothing game breaking, just a minor stutter. It may get worse as time presses on, but thus far it's more or less the same old Bastion.
The controls are a little hard to get used to for someone who is typically a console gamer, and timing power shots with the bow is a nightmare. They have changed some of the ways in which the weapon challenge levels work to make way for the new controls, but it's clear that this game was not originally for this platform and has some difficulty adjusting.
As for the game itself, what can I say that has not been said before? The soundtrack is spectacular, the storytelling style is marvelous, the voice acting is fantastic, and the combat is really satisfying, if a little hectic. I will not lie; it's brought a tear to my eye a few times. I'd definitely say this app is worth the money.
