Beautiful Game, Some Bugs
Finding out that this was ported to the iPad was like early Christmas for me, but I had some misgivings due to the reviews that said that the game suffers from severe lag issues. I've about halfway completed the game and only had some minor lag on the Langston River/Prosper Bluff level. Nothing game breaking, just a minor stutter. It may get worse as time presses on, but thus far it's more or less the same old Bastion.
The controls are a little hard to get used to for someone who is typically a console gamer, and timing power shots with the bow is a nightmare. They have changed some of the ways in which the weapon challenge levels work to make way for the new controls, but it's clear that this game was not originally for this platform and has some difficulty adjusting.
As for the game itself, what can I say that has not been said before? The soundtrack is spectacular, the storytelling style is marvelous, the voice acting is fantastic, and the combat is really satisfying, if a little hectic. I will not lie; it's brought a tear to my eye a few times. I'd definitely say this app is worth the money.
So far so good
Right now I've just completed chapter 2 ish. (Trying not to give spoilers) I'm on version 6.1.3 ipad 2. Works great no lag, has shut down randomly twice, but loaded back up and played fine. I prefer the classic toggle way, much easier to control.
As everyone keeps saying the soundtrack is awesome. Flows so freaking nicely throughout the game.
You get to level up, level up weapons, amoung other bonuses throughout the game.
5 star, and I'm pretty picky with my games. Nt to much finger mashing, controls are 4.5 star, graphics for what it's worth 4.5 star, gameplay 1000 star. Awesome narration so far.
I hope a sequel comes, because after I get done playing this I know I'm going to want to lay another.
Oh, and a side note, just played injustice gods among us, and it too was made by W.B. it cheats you from being able to win but a great game. I hope it doesn't do that to me on this one. $5.99, and that's all you have to pay. Not even an option to buy gold or crystals. MY KIND OF GAME!!!
But it could be better.
Story is immersive, and the way levels build as you move around is interesting. The screenshots certainly don't do it justice. The challenge can be modified via in game items (turn on certain "idols" to give effects like mobs move faster, or drop grenades that damage you when they die), so I see decent replayability.
The narration is hands down the best. Most people say they wish they could have Morgan Freeman narrate their lives, I would rather have Logan Cunningham.
The controls feel a bit clunky, but as long as you lay your tablet down, it works out fine.
The bad part, is that it lags. Like hell. You'll have to close everything but this game out, and even then, you'll probably hit lag spikes. Sometimes closing and reopening helps, sometimes it doesn't. Incredibly annoying when you're trying to complete a Who Knows Where stage.
Another downside, is that if you quit mid-stage, you'll start all the way back at the beginning. Can be annoying if you're on the go.
Overall, the price is right, the game is decent, and the lag is bearable/fixable. Definitely worth the purchase.
