Great blast from the past!
If you're expecting state of the art graphics from Battle Squadron One, you'll be disappointed. You'll also be missing the point. This is a nostalgic blast from the late 80s when other computers like the Amiga and the Atari ST existed.
If it was just nostalgia, it wouldn't be worth $3.99. However, it's a great shooter that's translated surprisingly well to iOS. You'll still miss using a gamepad for the controls, but I found it very playable just using the touch controls.
The touch controls are a little close together on the iPhone. However, I think that's simply because of the iPhone's smaller screen. Also, if you go into wide-screen mode, the controls fade into the background a bit too much. On the iPad though, the larger real estate made the touch controls very useful.
However, these are minor quibbles. It's a great game if you want to remember the time when gameplay meant more than having the best graphics. It's also a great game if you just want to spend a few minutes shooting everything that moves. I do appreciate the fact that it has different difficulty levels. That actually made the iOS version more approachable to me than the original Amiga version which appeared to have a single difficulty level.
First off, this game is amazing. Battle Squadron a hit back in the Amiga 500 days early 90s late 80s.
I Remember getting this and "Sword of Sodan" when me and my bro got an Amiga. Till this days the sound and music, 2D graphics still get me pumped. The studio that ported this game put a lot of love into this, I can see it and hear it. Good Job!
We gotta support these guys. There are so many games from the 16bit computor era that are just as awsome, and deserve a re-release, and this is a heck of a good start. Shadow of the Beast Anyone?, or Mencace?, Blood Money? the possibilitys are scary with this talented porting team. A+++++
Great conversion! 2.0 has GC achievements!
I loved this game (and it's prequel, Hybris) on Amiga back in the day. It was one of the best SHMUPs on the system. It aged very well and the game is a faithful reproduction of the original down to the stunning Amiga-quality music.
The control scheme is finger-direct touch for the ship which is by default always on autofire and that works great. Initially I thought it would be impossible to play this game without a decent joystick (old skool Competition Pro comes to mind) but fortunately I was wrong.
Great job, hoping & looking forward to Hybris and other Amiga scrolling shooters on iOS!
UPDATE: my only complaint was lack of Gamecenter achievements. 2.0 brings them in!!! On to achieving!
