Best Time to Cross the Border

By University Of California, San Diego (Calit2)

Open iTunes to buy and download apps.

*** As seen in the LA Times, KPBS, Homeland Security Newswire, and more! ***

The only app that tells you when is the best time to cross the US border! It also lets commuters report wait times via its iReport feature! GPS based wait time estimation for San Ysidro and Otay Mesa. Other ports coming soon. Twitter integration to ask questions and share information about ports.

In addition to providing current wait times to enter the US from Canada and Mexico, it also tells you what is the best time to cross the border, via historical graphs. It uses a crowd sourced approach to improve on the wait time estimates provided by CBP.

Its companion web site is

• Current US border wait times
• GPS based wait time estimation for San Ysidro and Otay Mesa
• iReport that lets you report wait times for better accuracy
• Best time to cross the border via historical graphs
• Current wait times for Passenger, Commercial & Pedestrian lanes
• Number of lanes open at every port

What's New in Version 2.0.2

- Fixed all timer bugs in iReport.
- You can set initial values for timer if you forget to start it in time.
- Start/Stop buttons now always show for timer.

More users need to input data

This could be such a great app but the wait times are not accurate at least not in the SENTRI lanes. If you place a "your history" tab perhaps this can I courage more users to input. It would allow them to check their personal cross time over time. Perhaps put a note tab within so we can input Mexican Holidays in order to anticipate more traffic at the border.

Possible spyware

This app needs your location to function. I do not aloud apps that "always" can track my location even when I'm not using it. There is no reason why this app should only work when it has access to your location. A list of border crossing to select from should be good enough. If they track people's movement while they cross the border to get actual times, just like Wize does on the road, then they only need your location when the app is in use, not always.

Useful app with good info but glitchy

Gets worse and worse with each update.

I still use it because it is fairly accurate none the less.

The issues:

Location shouldn't be required always. When app is running is acceptable. Make it a suggestion not a requirement. Just bad programming.

There are many glitches. ireport drops the timer about 90% of the time if I switch to a different app.

Sometimes I want to run the report timer but I turn off my data roaming. I can't even start the timer until I have home cell service.

Obj. The error messages. I get all kinds of messages. Every time I have a setting off or no cell service. I don't need 6 warnings showing the same thing.

Last update showed 0 improvements. Just more glitches.

But I still use it.
