The free version of BirdsEye is great for beginning and intermediate birders. It shows you the 100 most common birds near you (or for any spot on earth), which is fantastic for birders who want to learn about the birds you are most likely to see in your yard or the local park.

What's New in Version 2.3

Use color, size and habitat to quickly narrow down the list of nearby sightings to find what you are looking for. Just stepped off the plane in Sydney, Australia and want to identify that blue and white swallow? A couple taps and you'll know that you are looking at a Welcome Swallow!

Smart Search is targeted to the traveling birder and new birders, helping you quickly learn the birds wherever you are in the world.

Not happy with one of the Smart Search results? Just swipe left over the entry and click the Feedback button to let us know!

Tap the link icon on any bird description or map screen to get a direct link to xeno-canto recordings for that species!

Offline content like images and sounds are now stored in a more persistent area on your device, so it is less likely to be deleted by your phone if you are running low on storage. We want to make sure you can always access the data you need no matter where you are!

You can now select any month when you are looking at a hotspot. Great for trip planning!

Lots of bug fixes, tweaks, and improvements to make the app more stable.

Subscriptions will only make this app better!

The NEW BirdsEye gives the serious lister everything he or she needs in their pocket. Really, what more do you need? This app keeps getting better. As a subscriber, I have access to all of the features the app has to offer. Non-subscribers have access to
a portion of the species to get a feel for the app. If you pay for a monthly subscription, it will only help make the app better. The app is very complex and probably takes hours (and loads of cash to pay programmers) to build and make better. So, if you really like the fact of having an all-in-one app on your phone, bite the bullet and pay the subscription fee. It's only a few bucks a month and well worth it. BIRD ON.

Best app for discovering what birds are around you!

A+ BirdsEye is the best, easiest way to discover what birds have been observed by other folks around you. It leverages the eBird database to show you the avian biodiversity that has recently been reported in your neck of the woods (or prairie or desert etc.). This app will also reference your own account at eBird to whittle down the list of what birds you might be most interested in, if you haven't reported them yourself. All & all, BirdsEye is a solid product for serious birders, and this company had done more to advance the entire industry of smartphone app for birders than any other company.

Indispensable for serious birders in North America

I like the new search by color feature. I'm a pretty solid birder but still it is surprisingly useful when i travel. What are the expected yellow warblers in this area? This gives me an instant answer. Great in Mexico and Panama. Love it.

BirdsEye is my go-to app for finding birds when I travel. This most recent upgrade just made it better.

I feel the need to disagree with the reviewer who said that they took away features ... huh?! The features have expanded tremendously over the last year. There have been frequent upgrades each with new features.

There are a bunch of things I would like to see improved, including: The app is designed for iPhone. It works fine on my iPad, although the screen resolution is not optimized for iPad so it looks a little rough in this format. Also it doesn't rotate.
