Truly outstanding Wild-West Steampunk Horror-thing
The setting alone of this game merits five stars. From the opening cutscene, one is already dropped into what feels like a an alternate Wild West very much like ours, but with significant Steampunk and alternate history elements. Although we never seem to delve too deeply into this almost-America (complete, it seems, with a distinct flag flapping here and there throughout town -- nice touch), it feels like a fully-realized setting with its own integrity and history.
Graphically, this game will knock your spurs off. It is absolutely top-tier for iOs games. Little cinematic flourishes make the game even more visceral, such as the focus shifting from the protagonist to an enemy he is aiming at-- making it feel like a camera is focusing and refocusing the action.
Gameplay is fun, and challenging without being impossible. I'm personally not using the "newfangled" controls but the so-called "traditional" setup, and I appreciate th option to choose.
This is a great game, the only thing is the controls take some time to completely figure out and master. Same deal with some of the little tricks during battles. You don't need IAPs to play this game; I'm doing fine without them and am halfway through chapter three already, but you will be using most of your gold for healing potions for the first part of the game.
Tip: save up the green spirit stones to unlock infinite second wind cards, once you have those you can save gold for things other than health, and start to increase your character's powers.
After the new update, you have to be connected to the Internet the first time you open the game. After that I'm not sure.
I have finished the game without IAP's, and am now continuing through on the next level difficulty.
Only con I have with this game is that the automatic camera (introduced with the update that added an iPhone control scheme) can be annoying at times during battle, and lead to attacking an enemy I don't want to, rolling into instead of away from an attack, etc. Not a huge issue but still annoying at times. Other than that, great game! (But I wish you could buy spirit stones with gold, hint hint)

This looks like it could have been a good game, but it's one of those games that, if you want to "win" or even get very far at all - you will have to pay for upgrades.
This game is otherwise a lesson in frustration. Each enemy takes forever to kill, and when there is more than one, the screen becomes a jumble of confusion when one attempts to deal with off-screen, on-coming attacks. You'll not be able to successfully deal with these multiple enemies (because, again, they require too much damage to kill), and there is no safe place to roll/dodge to; the screen is too small; the enemies are too strong.
So what you will be able to do with what you initially see as a great third-person-type shooter become disappointingly limited.
I thought other developers would have learned from Madfinger and Gameloft in making a great game; that the standard has been set, and now the direction to go is no longer debated, but no...
And the "Freemium" idea makes a good game bad, and a bad game worse (I have stayed away from Gameloft's Freemium - they are just not worth anyone's money or time), and you'll have the worst of both worlds working against you in this game. A shame, too... At first glance, I thought I would be playing another Shadowgun for the next few days...
