With its BMW ConnectedDrive solutions tailored specially to electric vehicles, the BMW i3 / i8 is the first series-produced vehicle to be fully networked. Its networked BMW i Navigation system with Range Assistant and charging station indicator takes you to your destination along the most efficient route.
The BMW i Remote App is like an extension of your BMW i3 / i8 on your smartphone. With BMW TeleService specially developed for BMW i, your BMW i dealer will always know when you need a service.
The BMW i Remote App has extended features that enable drivers to make the best and most efficient use of their BMW i3 / i8 even when away from the vehicle.
Or maybe you simply want to know how efficient your own driving style is.
The BMW i Remote App can only be used in conjunction with a BMW i3 / i8 having an active BMW Assist™ contract, as part of BMW ConnectedDrive Services. Please be advised, if you have recently created an account for the My BMW ConnectedDrive portal (www.bmwusa.com/mybmwconnecteddrive), you must log in to the app using those credentials.
The following functions are supported by the BMW i Remote App (they may vary from market to market):
• Information about your battery’s charging status and vehicle range (electric and Range Extender range).
• Dynamic Range Map, which enables you to check whether a destination is within range.
• Display of driver and vehicle position on your smartphone.
• Set departure times, thereby optimizing battery usage.
• Display of various charging statuses.
• Utilize Remote Services (lock doors, preactivate the air-conditioning, and other remote functions).
• Display vehicle information (total miles, vehicle condition, servicing requirements).
• Navigate easily from your location back to your vehicle (Vehicle Finder) and transfer important destinations to the vehicle.
• Calculate the efficiency of your own driving style using your most recent route results, a CO2 counter, and other driving statistics. Compare these figures within the Community as well.
• Optimize your driving style using integrated tutorials.
The BMW i Remote App is available free of charge. It can be used on the basis of the general contract and usage conditions that apply to BMW ConnectedDrive Services.

Locks key fob in car, won't unlock.
I used it to lock my car and immediately realized my key fob was in it. Needless to say I was highly disappointed to see that there was no option to remotely unlock the car. You can call BMW and provide your passcode but that should really be an option along side locking. I've not yet used it to precondition the car. The charger map is the most up to date in my experience, but I love PlugShare for they rating option so I can see where defective chargers are before pulling up to them. The option to rate chargers would be nice too. But overall it works to know range and watch the range increase while charging.
Used to work...no longer...
Was useful to check the charging state while doing other things, and to turn on the HVAC so the air temperature inside was good from the start of a drive.
Now simply fails most of the time.
Doesn't update the vehicle status, even after a reset, reinstall, or restart of the phone. Forgets login settings and left having to login again and again. Crashes partway through remotely turning on the ventilation system, with no apparent way to fix the hang; even software reinstallation doesn't help.
The worst iOS app I've used, and I've used some bad ones.
One would certainly expect better from a multinational luxury car maker. Based on the many adverse reviews, and my experience with this software and indeed the software on my i3, I doubt fixes will be forthcoming, and so my advice would be to simply ignore this "functionality" from BMW. They don't take it seriously, so when you consider buying their car, you shouldn't take it seriously either.
Awesome but leaves room for improvement
The map with the chargers could be more updated. The charge percentage is lagging vs. real charge. It takes a while to send a pre-condition command and it fails frequently even when the car is in a parking lot with nothing obstructing the signal. And it would be awesome to have a complication on the Apple Watch to show percentage and not just the glance. Otherwise it's great and does the job. The fact that I can pre-condition my car from my phone is awesome.
