Navionics Lakes North App

Regular customer

I understand that the support for this app was rendered unusable due to IOS updates and that there are no plans to update or replace. When Navionics decided to market via the Apple Store for IOS products I would have thought the need for updates would have been recognized. So I purchased the App which was fantastic and perfectly suited for my area. When it stopped working I was very disappointed but understood the need for IOS updates and patiently waited. After more than a year I sent and inquiry to Navionics about the status for this App. I was informed that there will be no update to allow this App to work but that other Apps were available, “for purchase”. In reviewing these options I found them not suitable for my Region. I know Navionics has a variety of marine navigation hardware on the market that, for a price, can service my needs nicely. The rub is that I can no longer trust them. I purchased software they offered, then they decided to discontinue support with the option of “purchasing” other Apps. How can I trust them not to terminate support for any of the hardware/software they are marketing after I “purchase” these items. I know Navionics to be a competent provider of Marine Navigation system but can no longer trust their after market support.

Developer Response

Thank you for contacting Navionics, we are sorry to read your disappointment. Note that with iOS 11, Apple is dropping 32-bit app support. That means all the old apps that were not updated to 64-bit since Apple introduced the iPhone 5s in 2013 will no longer run on any device upgraded to iOS 11. This affects our old bundle apps that were discontinued in Fall 2010 and that some users have been able to continue to use on devices running OS versions higher than iOS 6, despite the instability caused by these non-supported versions. At the time we also encouraged users to migrate to our new application for its larger coverage area, updated chart data, and many new features. These new features were not possible to include with the build of the original apps. The new apps were also offered at a discounted price for a limited time during the initial release of the product. The old first generation apps, didn't have the chance to have updated charts nor could use our latest advanced features. Boating and Boating HD apps can be installed for free and give you the chance to test charts and app's features for a 15 days trial. You will notice a substantial difference compared to your old app, as it is not the same product. With the first coverage purchase you get access to detailed charts and a yearly subscription to Navionics+. Navionics+ subscription includes updates and app's advanced features and can be renewed at 50% off price list once expired. This is very important for security reasons and gives more reliability to our products. Without the subscription, charts remain on the app and all basic functionalities are available. There is just no access to the advanced features and chart updates. For a full listing of features available with and without an active Navionics+ subscription, please see: http://bit.ly/2tTffPJ. If you need additional assistance in figuring out which coverage area is needed, please, write us at help@navionics.com, referencing case number #392217.

Not sure if I really like it.

I bought the app to use mostly on Lake Michigan. The app works but it has a few issues.
First, it has only a few of the Mariñas in some areas.
Second, must of the times the routs when you use "boat to" takes you inland. Apparently the app cannot define very well between inland and the water.
Third, it doesn't really gives you the waves report; you have to find some buoys and many times it reports the wrong wave size. When you click on Buoys does not give you the wave info either.
Fourth, once you start the navigation it does not give you the distance to your destination just the information since you started the trip. The map doesn't update your location automatically so you are force to go their way which most likely than not takes you inland.

For being the #1 boating app as they claim, they have a lot to improve still. It is $10 a year after all.

Developer Response

Thank you for your feedback, as it is important for us when making improvements to our apps. We hope to provide some clarity on certain features, and offer resolution. First, if you find that some Marinas are not on our maps, you have the opportunity to add them using the Community Edits feature. For instructions, please see: http://bit.ly/2gJSU4J. Second, when you tap the "Boat To" option, this will create a route for you - however in order for the route to calculate properly you must make sure to check your boat settings as well as start and end point locations/depths: http://bit.ly/2eYQxHr. Third, at this time wave height forecasts are not available within the app, but we will certainly pass this along as a suggestion to our developers for consideration with future updates. Fourth, when you start navigation after creating a route, you should have a Navigation Module pane as part of the Navionics+ subscription, which will include: Estimated time to Destination, Estimated time to Waypoint (route leg), Course over Ground, Estimated Distance to Arrival, Estimated Distance to Waypoint, Fuel Consumption, Points of Interest at your Destination as well as In-route editing and real time navigation stats. For further questions and support, please write to help@navionics.com referencing case #343859. Thank you!

Was ok now worthless with out subscriptions

Paid for this years ago, worked ok for a back up gps and pre planning trips when access to boat electronics were not available. But now the map options are gone and it’s asking me to buy annual subscriptions, when I purchased I didn’t NEED subscriptions only if I wanted to enhance my experience. So can I get a refund or credit for what I purchased that no longer works? It was not a free trial it was paid for. Will be looking into other apps...

Developer Response

The current Navionics apps on the market are a one-time purchase for the life of the app if you continue to use it on the same app platform. You can continue to use charts that have been saved to the device, as well as download additional charting within your selected coverage area and have use of basic/free features within the app. For a detailed list go to https://bit.ly/2uqENpb.

In the Summer of 2014 we introduced the option to receive chart updates with the release of Navionics+. Prior to this, chart updates and advanced features were separate in-app purchases. These were simply streamlined into one purchase. A Navionics+ subscription is a yearly subscription available at a deeply discounted price after the first year of your initial purchase. Navionics+ includes the options to update charting data for downloaded map areas, Advanced Map Options with Satellite and Terrain Map Overlay, enhanced route planning and navigation with Navigation Module and our award-winning Dock-to-dock Autorouting, and Advanced Weather Data. You can renew your Navionics+ subscription directly in-app by going to Menu > Charts & Upgrades, and selecting the coverage you wish to renew for up to 50% off.
