Great little app for those of us that either don’t have an Apple keyboard, or for whatever reason our Apple keyboard does not function properly (F1 & F2 with or without the ‘fn’ key). I’m running a Mac Mini and the wired Apple keyboard used to work when plugged into my Apple display's rear USB port (actually, any of the three USB ports). Well, it no longer works when connected to the Apple display (no worky at all) and when I plug the keyboard directly into the Mac Mini the brightness keys F1 & F2 (as I said before, with or without the ‘fn’ key) don’t work, but otherwise the keyboard is perfectly functional, including all the other function keys. Interestingly, if I reboot, the brightness function keys start working again, so no telling what’s causing them to fail.
Only reason for 4 stars and not 5 is that the menu bar icon disappears completely when you check the box for “Use dark menu bar and Dock" via the System Preferences -> General preference pane. The icon is actually on the menu bar and I can click in the void to the left of my other menu bar icons and pull down the app’s slider bar. Of course, if you are using the light menu bar, the app’s icon shows up just fine.
Also, I agree with another reviewer - it would be best if the brightness actually tracked the slider movement in real time, rather than finding out how bright your selection makes the screen when you release the slider.
Works Fine, Could Be Better
It's convenient having a brightness icon in the task bar to be able to change the brightness of the screen right from there. But it would be better if, when I grabbed the knob and moved it up and down, the brightness changed along with it. But as it is now, the brightness only changes when I let go of the knob, leaving me to guess where I want it and then finding out. If the brightness changed as I moved the knob up and down, I would rate it 5 stars.
For all you clueless idiots who are saying you can change the brightness right from the keyboard: you're right. BUT, if you download a application that requires you to use the F1, F2, etc. keys this is perfect. I couldn't change the brightness because I turned off that function in order to use Adobe Flash Professional. This is very useful, download if you have an application with those keyboard shortcuts.
