Byword is a First Class App

I learned about Byword from David Sparks’s Markdown ebook. I had tried several other apps but this one is the best, by far. The simplicity of the interface hides a very sophisticated Markdown editor that I am just now beginning to appreciate fully.

I can always think of improvements and enhancements, however, and Byword is no exception. It would be nice to have automatic save on keyboard inactivity or at a specified interval to keep my paranoia at bay. A little more attention to nested lists would be welcome, as I sometimes have problems formatting them to appear as I expected. (It’s entirely possible that the problem is due to my own ineptness.)

Overall, I am extremely pleased.

Still my go-to writing app

I try a lot of writing apps, but I keep coming back to Byword. I like how the Markdown elements fade, but the best thing ever is the keyboard shortcut Command-Option-C, which copies the Markdown document to the Clipboard in HTML, ready to paste into a CMS or even just another file. It’s nice clean HTML I don’t have to clean up, and it just makes my life easier. The iCloud integration is solid. I never have crashes or lose data. This app is worth the money if you write in Markdown, and it’ll make the transition to Markdown easier if you want to learn Markdown but never have.

Still my default application for writing

While not the most feature-rich of the minimalist writing tools, Byword remains the cleanest, fastest, and by far the easiest on the eyes which I’ve used. Byword is for people more interested in writing now and designing later.

Additionally, its developers are refreshingly agenda-free. From what I’ve seen of their web-presence, their communcations are free of political, sexual, or religious (or antireligious) squawking, in any direction. They make a great writing tool and that seems to be all they care about, insofar as their company is concerned.

MacOS Sierra has caused no problems for Byword so far in my experience. For those who’ve had issues with Byword on Sierra, I’m certain the guys at Metaclassy will patch it soon.

Best to all, and happy writing.
