Customer Reviews

fabulous app, but no winning streaks, please

This app is wonderful. I did a mindfulness course two years ago but was having trouble keeping up my meditation practice. Calm has helped me to get back into it, and the new “21 days” program is like taking my course all over again. It’s really great. My only negative thought is about the calendar that pops up after each session, indicating that I’m on a “3-day (or whatever) streak." The program emphasizes getting away from “should”s and self-judgment. It says repeatedly that there is no right way to meditate. Having this calendar indicating “streaks” seems really counterintuitive. So if I miss a couple of days, there it is to remind me I was “bad,” or it congratulates me when I’m “good” and meditate every day. This is not dieting or exercise. There should be nothing competitive about it, not even competing with yourself. . . . The only other thing is the increase in price. I didn’t know about it till I came here to write the review. I am shocked!!! I was happy to spend $9.99 for the full program, but I would never spend 50 bucks to renew. I will be very sad when my subscription runs out.

OVERPRICED and repetitive - look for free options instead

Not only do I NOT like it. I am NOT re-subscribing! Let me explain…last Fall, I tried the subscription for three months at a reasonable price. But the guided meditations were very repetitive. There was little diversity, especially when I found how much is available for FREE in guided meditations. The sound effects and scenery ARE lovely. I cancelled my subscription at the end of 2014 because I felt is was not worth the money and I could get a better product - for FREE - with "Insight Time". Not to mention the many podcasts (Meditation Oasis, for example) which are also free. Due to some changes within my own life recently, I decided I was going to give ‘Calm' another try. Maybe things had changed. Well…they had. The price is now sky-high. Ridiculous! For that price, you should be massaging my shoulders as well! And for what you get, there is absolutely no reason for a “subscription”. Come on, guys. You’re supposed to be IMPROVING our mental outlook!

Greed took over

First of all, the app is really nice. I like it as was a subscriber for some time.

Now, to the issues.

Even though I understand there are definitely expenses to create the new courses, at one point, adding new ones just stops making sense. And beyond that, what else is recurring in this app? They don't really have to pay for server traffic (sans the initial course downloads), and as said, creating tons of different patterns can only add so much value.

So why does this app has to be a subscription bases in the first place? I don't know… BUT I was planning to pay, considering the original price. $5 per 3 months and $10/year did put up questions, but the quality of the app was "calming" down these.

However, with the 2.0 release, and the FIVE times price hike, this just got ridiculous.
You want more money? Create more courses, charge for them individually or as packs. Everyone will understand that.
Recurring subscription without much of the recurring costs on your side is not what I would understand.

But at least thanks for introducing me to this category of apps. Think I've already found the one I like and which won't extort money from me for no reason at all.

Repeat after me: GREED. IS. BAD for long-term relationships with your clients.
