Cameras + Formats is the essential reference and calculator app for cinematographers, editors, ACs, DITs, producers and filmmakers of all kinds. From DSLRs to the Arri Alexa, we've got you covered.
"How much hard drive space will I need for this shoot?"
"What's the dynamic range of the C300 Mk II?”
"How big is this H.264 file going to be?"
“Can Adobe Premiere work with Sony Raw files?”
If you've ever asked one of these questions, this is the app for you.
• Search over 90 cameras with a list that includes Arri, Canon, Red, Sony, Blackmagic, Panasonic, GoPro and more. Or browse by format, from modern standards like ProRes and DNxHR to older ones like DVCPro-HD and Betacam.
• Specs include dynamic range, sensor size, native ISO, lens mounts, resolutions, frame rates and more. You’ll see how well each camera and format performs with the latest version of Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro, Avid Media Composer, and DaVinci Resolve. Plus there's a link to the manufacturer's website for firmware & manuals, and a phone number for support in your country.
• A versatile calculator shows you how much footage you can fit on your camera card or hard drive-- or how much storage space you'll need for a given length of footage. The calculator even includes an estimate of how long it will take to transfer the footage to your hard drive!
"With the abundance of camera formats now out there, it’s easy to get lost with which system can do what. With the Cameras + Formats app this information is now at your fingertips."
"This is one of my favorites. It has every single piece of information for nearly every single camera on the market today. Comparing recording formats between cameras has never been easier."
-Shane Hurlbut, ASC

Notation of Frame Rates
When describing 29.97 fps, some people just say “30”. Or, they count interlacing fields instead of frames, which is why “60i” also refers to 29.97 fps. So to avoid confusion, we don’t use any field rates or shorthand. If a manufacturer says “60” or “30” but they mean 29.97, we use 29.97. This means that if you see a “60” in this app, we’re talking about true 60 fps (which is usually slow motion).
Actual Free Space in Calculator
Your results will be more accurate if you enter the amount of actual free space. For example, a 128GB card may offer only 120GB after formatting. Or a 4TB hard drive may offer only 3.5TB. You can usually find the amount of actual free space by mounting the card or drive on your computer after formatting it.
Camera Calculator vs. Format Calculator
You may find calculator results can differ between formats and cameras; for example, XAVC in the Sony F55 calculator will produce a different result than in the XAVC calculator. This is because some cameras use additional space for error correction and metadata. Generally, we recommend using the camera calculator if working in production, and the format calculator if working in post.

I love it
10 bucks is worth not looking stupid
No film formats
Saw a film logo I thought it has film format, but not! So really disappointed to pay nine dollars for it
Hello, sorry you misunderstood the app's description. You can always check the supported cameras and formats at www.grayhourmedia.com/formats.
I'm considering adding film formats though, so please send me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org, and we can chat about what you'd like to see included in the app.
This app is great! Saved me as DoP and Ac!
