By picking up radio signals sent from the U.S. Capitol Building and using optical character recognition, Capitol Bells provides real-time vote updates and tallies from both Chambers of Congress.
With its virtual voting feature, you can weigh in with your Congresswoman or Senator directly, from your smart phone to hers.
What's New in Version 3.4
Capitol Bells has been updated for the 114th Congress including several bug fixes.
1) House and Senate legislation now link to the proper bills at CapitolBells.com.
2) Popular bills from the community now stream into the app whenever Congress isn't considering any specific pieces of legislation.
3) User votes are streamed in from the web community.
4) Floor update tweets no longer cause unrecoverable crashes.
Crashes immediately on opening. Non-functional.
Cool idea poor typography
I think this is a great idea, I haven't used it too much. But it's cool to see the political process more clearly, in addition to giving me an easy way to participate. I just have a few issues, first I don't like the Facebook or Google plus logins. It's mostly a privacy issue, but it sort of scares me to have something so personal like Facebook associated with this process. Maybe I'm just paranoid, but my Facebook profile is private, and I'm worried that they will use my personal information to gain too much information about my political leanings. I may not have articulated that in the right way, my example may be weak but I hope you understand what I'm saying.
In addition to that, the design of the app is pretty all over the place, it's really hard visually to understand how to navigate the app. Many of the interfaces are very cluttered and it can be sort of overwhelming for me. In addition to that the typography is bad. Especially when reading a bill. What I've seen quite frequently is that there end up being a lot of hyphens. Which is a clear indicator of a bad type size to column width ration. Which could affect readability and also people's decision to read the bills listed, which I feel is ultimately what the app is for. If it were much simpler to navigate the app, it could help to get people engaged in the political process.
I would consider trying to get some designers on board, specifically someone focused on User Experience, with a bit of a background in print so you know they can handle typography well. Other than that, great concept! Keep up the great work!
