LETS GO! ... OH NO! (or.. YIPEE!)
Caveman is a game where the goal is to guide Cavemen to the exit on the level.
:: GAME PLAY
Cavemen enter the level through an open hatch and walk aimlessly to their death or around in circles following the path outlined - specific skills can be assigned to Cavemen to create a new path and help guide the others to the designated exit.
The following skill sets are available:
- CLIMBER: scale those walls
- FLOATER: float down to safety
- EXPLODER: pop!
- BLOCKER: block the path
- BUILDER: build a bridge
- BASHER: bash a horizontal path
- MINER: mine a diagonal path
- DIGGER: dig a vertical path
Each level has a set of requirements to complete where a combination of skillsets may need to be used to solve the level - there is more than one solution available; how many cavemen can you save!
With four difficulty levels (easy, medium, obscure, insane) and 120 levels + hidden bonus levels - this game is guaranteed to bring you hours of enjoyment and gaming addiction!
A number of game play options exist to customize the game play to individual preference; assignment of tools can be via clicking on the caveman, clicking on the toolbar or both. The game resumes play on interaction by default but this can be disabled under the options screen. Keyboard shortcuts are also defined to simplify the usage of the game.
Mobile 1UP has worked very hard to ensure that all levels are solvable; a complete set of solution guides for every level are available on the Mobile 1UP website (high definition video and detailed walk throughts) - of course the challenge is being able to solve them on your own!
A special "unlock feature" has been provided where unlocked levels can be accessed via a special code; in addition to revealing special secrets of the game engine (easter eggs) - a complete list of the relevant unlock codes are available on the Mobile 1UP website. Some codes change on a daily basis - so be sure to visit often to find all the goodies that are available!
Caveman is a game inspired by the classic Lemmings developed by Psygnosis released for Amiga, DOS, et al in 1991. The project started as a port of the game, but due to intellectual property concerns the game was given a new set of graphics, audio and some custom levels to bring the game genre up to the standards expected by gamers in this era. The game was developed by Aaron Ardiri, the graphics provided by Tomas Miller, and the sounds were provided by Michael McGee.

Still didn't fix the lvl 19 bug
There was a recent update, but I still cannot complete level 19. The time simply runs out before enough cavement are released. I would like to play the rest of the game, but there is no way to skip levels and I can't get past this. Very disappointed that I paid $10 for a game that doesn't allow me past a level. Will repost a good review when this is fixed. Other than this I like the game play. I loved lemmings as a kid.
Nice idea but needs polish
Caveman HD is a re-imagining of Lemmings. The fact that it isn't Lemmings is because Sony, who own the rights, would not allow the developers to make a clone. Hence we now guide Cavemen to the safety and not Lemmings.
So how does it play? The game mechanics are all there and it works. The cavemen idea is nice. I really want to like this title (and it gets close) but right now it doesn't do it for me. In several little ways the game feels unpolished. When I spend ten bucks on a game on the app store I'd like to see something with the polish of World of Goo. Caveman HD feels like one of those games you can install for free on Ubuntu.
I can offer specific examples of stuff that bugs me:
- The mouse cursor is duplicated on-screen. I see both the standard pointer and the Lemmings-style cross. Furthermore, the in-game pointer lags behind the standard pointer. It really moves quite jerkily and that very much ruins the game experience for me.
- Scrolling is jerky and slow.
- The backround and foreground in-game graphics are too similar in style eachother and there is insufficient contrast between them. This gives the gameplay a claustrophobic feel that I find unpleasant.
- Similarly, the text and background clash in the between-game screens and that makes those hard to read. The cursor reverts to the standard OS cursor in those screens and it's easy to lose it against the background.
- The UI feels oddly dull and lifeless. Why not have the icons at the bottom of the play screen brighten or otherwise highlight when the mouse moves over them? There is insufficient feedback when the user presses one of the ability buttons along the bottom of the screen. I know they're animated but somehow that's not enough.
- The explosion animation for the Caveman is a real anticlimax. They sort of dissolve in a bloody mess. The explosion was one of the best parts of the original. Bring it back somehow! Let stuff fly around! [NOTE: this is now mostly fixed in v. 1.2.3]
- For a reason I cannot comprehend, the fist few levels of the Easy setting have text drawn onto the background to tell you what to do. This is a puzzle game and those levels are easy! Let people figure it out.
Overall, I find the game-play of this clone to be oddly lifeless and uncompelling. I think if the author were to address the above concerns the game would work substantially better. Right now, though, I feel like I've wasted 10 dollars.
