The year is 1289. To strengthen the borders of the Kingdom of France, King Philip the Fair decided to have a new castle built. For the time being, Caylus is but a humble village, but soon, workers and craftsmen will be flocking by the cartload, attracted by the great prospects. Around the building site, a city is slowly rising up…
The players embody master builders. By building the King’s castle and developing the city around it, they earn prestige points and gain the King’s favour. When the castle is finished, the player who has earned the most prestige wins the game.

Stick with the board game
I played the board game of Caylus prior to playing the application. The app layout is nothing like the board game. The graphics and layout of icons and interface are confusing in this app. Instead of keeping the same look as the board game, Big Daddy Creations changed the look and consequently, hurt the game. Brettspielwelt demonstrates that games can transfer to computer play and keep the same layout and look as the board game. I just don't have the patience to put forth the effort it would take to familiarize myself with this game's graphics, even though I know the game very well. The AI is very weak. I scored 157 points in a 3-player game, even after making several mistakes due to the interface, and still won comfortably.
To sum up: As a game, Caylus is one of the best. But, as an app implementation of it, it is merely okay. It can be frustrating for those already comfortable and familiar with the board game version. Very poor AI, even at the highest level.
Fun game, POOR multiplayer implementation
Please fix the asynchronous multi player:
-Add a "nudge" feature to alert unresponsive players that it is their turn
-get rid of the auto resign limit.. I have yet to complete an online game since it auto resigns after a day or two of no response for the other player
-add the option to pick what resources you want (if there's the option) when you PLACE YOUR WORKER! That way it doesn't go back to each player individually during the collect resources phase. This would drastically speed up multi player games
-have the building menu be a separate pop out from the right side of screen for "quick access". I find myself scrolling to this constantly to check what has or hasn't been built yet and the respective costs
Tutorial could use some improvements
Please make some improvements to asynchronous multi and I will increase my rating accordingly
Caylus has a new fan
This app has made me a Caylus fan! In general I like worker placement games (Agricola, LeHavre, Fresco to name a few) but the artwork of the Caylus board game has always turned me off; it's a little too abstract and colorful. But Bravo to the folks at Big Daddy for making a very enjoyable user interface and 'board'.
I hear there is a reprint of Caylus in the works; hopefully the artwork can learn something from this app.
On the other hand, it's hard to beat this iPad version - my wife and I can play a 4-player game curled up on the couch, with all the 'fiddly' parts taken care of.
