The year is 1289. To strengthen the borders of the Kingdom of France, King Philip the Fair decided to have a new castle built. For the time being, Caylus is but a humble village, but soon, workers and craftsmen will be flocking by the cartload, attracted by the great prospects. Around the building site, a city is slowly rising up…
The players embody master builders. By building the King’s castle and developing the city around it, they earn prestige points and gain the King’s favour. When the castle is finished, the player who has earned the most prestige wins the game.

A modern classic
I've been into modern board games for a few years now, and always heard about Caylus and how dry and boring it is. But I decided to give it a shot, and man am I glad I did. The game is absolutely outstanding. There's so much depth to the strategy, planning ahead your moves, blocking opponents, driving them to your buildings, squeezing out those last few victory points. It is hands down one of my new favorite games.
The port by Big Daddy Creations isn't the prettiest or most dramatic, but it conveys the theme smartly and is well laid out. I could think of a couple of tweaks that might improve functionality, but they would be pretty minor and would only add to what is already a really solid app. The tutorial works really well for first time players (like me), though I can't say how a total newbie to board games would take to it... Having a familiarity with worker placement games like Agricola or Lords of Waterdeep would probably really help.
UI lacking, Preferences limited
I enjoy the board game but this app could use some work. Several issues I've already encountered after one play:
- No "undo" button or "are you sure?" dialog. If you accidentally touch the wrong button you're screwed. (Agricola and Puerto Rico apps both have something like this built in).
- Yes and No buttons are offered in the form of Checkmark and X mark but there is nowhere verbalizing what the question even is. If you lose track of what step they are talking about, you are left helpless. Spaces are not highlighted when they are in play so there is no cue from that. There should be a ? to click.
- You need to memorize what the different buildings look like to know what they are on the board. There is no info provided when you tap on it. You can go to the deep menu to look it up but that's a pain.
- Visually, it's sometimes hard to tell which space the Provost is on because he's sort of between two.
- You can't access Options from the game without quitting the game.
- The Option menu is sparse anyway with only 4 settings. (Music, Sound Effects, Facebook login, Tutorial on/off.)
- Options I would like to see: AI and Animation Speed"; Are you Sure?" Dialog on/off; Music and Sound Effects VOLUME, Change graphics to look like Board Game pieces, etc. (the current graphics look pretty but it's nice to have options)
Unsure I would buy again if I had the chance
I like modern board games and have a fairly good collection of them but have never played this. Bought it as the companies other game, Neuroshima Hex is simply awesome. This game....I am very unsure. There is a learning curve. The tutorial is nearly non-existent as is the explanation of game goals and ways of winning. I will struggle on for a while longer but at present feel I just spent some money I didn't need to.
If you have played the board game then I am sure your experience will be different. But if you want to have a quick and easy entry into understanding the board game then I think this may not be the best way of doing so.
I hope I am wrong.
