Always No Pay Wall. Updates Improve.

What makes CBS News stand out among the other network news companies in the last decade is that it has gone out of its way to reach viewers via online streaming. This is why you can watch CBSN via devices such as computers, phones, and gaming consoles — for free and with no login. Thanks for keeping the content free and not behind a cable pay wall unlike so many other network streaming services!

The recent update now makes CBS News chrome cast compatible. Now, I can stream Face the Nation (the most serious of the Sunday morning news shows, in my humble opinion), 60 Minutes, and even CBSN’s 24/7 news coverage to my TV, with many of these available on demand shortly after their original airdate.

What’s keeping me from giving the 5th star is the lack of rewind/scrubbing/DVR capabilities during live broadcasts. Although shows are posted within a day of their air date, it would be nice to have a show available an hour or so after it’s broadcast.

Does not keep track of where you are

So for short, current news bits the app is just fine. However, the app lets you watch recent episodes of full shows like 48hours. These are free and advertising supported, just like TV. It is great…until you have to take a call or answer an email. Come back to the app, and you find yourself back at the main screen. You then have to FIND the show you were watching—not always easy—then try and figure out how far you were into the show, because it has forgotten how far you had progressed. As you slide through the show, you have to watch EVERY ad you have already watched. So if you’re 35 minutes into the show and watched 12 minutes of ads, be prepared to watch them again as you slide. This is outrageous and annoying. In competition for eyeballs, I am amazed that CBS would do this, but also that it does not maintain your position when you pause and come back a few minutes later. Bad, bad, annoying, user-unfriendly design.

timely news .....never proofread

CBSNews is timely, but the content is seemingly not proofread by anyone in a significant percentage of stories.
Errors in spelling and grammar are rife throughout reports.
CBS news has responded to my several earlier emails with a stock answer about “working to improve their product”, but results are not evident.
Additional items of note are occasional links which go nowhere and one male writer with a decidedly alt-right bent who seems incapable of objective reporting on certain, but not all stories.
I understand that getting stories out quickly might be a goal of CBS, but consideration needs to given to the quality of the efforts of reporters. I have even previously suggested that stories might possibly be written by summer interns from countries where English is not their first language and I stick by that query.
There are good journalism programs at excellent universities in the US. Are their graduates not interested in CBS?

Hire a few copy editors and make error correction and prevention part of the mission statement. Focus! Put out a better quality product on a consistent basis. Is that too much to ask?

I’d welcome a response from CBSNews telling me specifically what CBCBSNEWS is actually doing to improve the writing.

Overall the written coverage rates 3.5 stars (can’t click the half star); the televised reporting higher at 4 stars, but I don’t find time to sit in front of a TV.
