CheckBook Pro 4+

Love this app! It works very well. I left Quicken because they now require you to “subscribe” to their software and store your financial data in the cloud. NOPE!! Have used Quicken for Mac since the day it came out. No more…already uninstalled it after starting to use this app. Was able to migrate all of my Quicken data to Checkbook Pro without an issue.

The only minor bug I would like to see changed, is when I am making a payment to a credit card, I would like it to be one entry, so it comes out of my checking account and automatically applies to my credit card. Right now, I have to do two separate entries…one to show the debit from my checking account and a second to show the payment applied to my credit card. NOT a deal breaker for me though, but that was the only reason I gave 4 stars instead of a perfect 5. UPDATE!! Thanks to support on this app, I found out how to make a one transaction transfer between accounts! :) Fantastic support and the one minor issue I had with the app is no longer an issue. Perfect 5 stars! Again, thanks to the app developer. I really do recommend this app! :)

Nice job on the app! Fix that one, very minor, bug and I’ll update to 5 stars. Thanks for a great app at a great price that allows me to store MY data on MY computer and that I don’t have to “subscribe” to! Please keep it that way.

Here's how to transfer between Accounts so when you create an Entry a matching Entry in the other Account will be created for you: As you fill in the details of an Entry and get to the To or From field, look just to the left of the field at the actual word "To" or "From" and you'll see a triangle next to it to tell you the word is also a button with a menu. Click the word "To" or "From" to reveal the menu, then click the "To Account" or "From Account" menu item, and the To or From field will become a menu button with the names of your other Accounts. Click the menu button and choose the Account you want to transfer to or from and you're all set. Hope that helps. Keep in touch at support@splasm.com if you need anything!

I am moving my banking software from a very old MS Money program on a very old Gateway computer that my wife and children don't trust any more. Checkbook Pro is the closest I've found to the ease of data entry that i found with MS Money but it is still labor intensive and not easy to teach to my non-technical spouse of 55 years. Our primary complaint is that navigation via the tab key is nor intuitive and requires some retraining. We were used to simply pressing the enter key to move from item to item and pressing enter closes out the entry. The other delay in entering data occurs when one has to enter more debits or deposits. Instead of simply opening another form of the same type, one has to use the mouse to select another form from the top icons. A third issue is changing the date of a transaction - it would be nice to simply use the /- keys to increase or decrease the date of a transaction from the previous one instead of having to either physically change the date or use the calendar via the mouse. Using the mouse delays data input and takes attention away from the bank or credit card statements one is working from.

Still, the program appears to do everything I want it to do in preparation for tax season. I will reserve final judgement until I have to create reports in prepartion for filing our taxes and whether or not I survive trying to teach my wife how to use the program should I not be around to coach her.

Hi there! When you've finished creating or making changes to an Entry, you can confirm everything and create a new Deposit or Debit in one stroke with the buttons at the bottom left corner of the Entry sheet. They look like a small plus (+) or minus (-) with the Deposit and Debit colors set in CheckBook Pro's Preferences. You can also get the same effect with the regular keyboard shortcuts for creating new Deposits and Debits, Command (⌘) + and Command (⌘) -. The plus (+) and minus (-) keys should change an Entry's Date, though maybe not in the way you're used to - they work for whichever part of the date you've selected. For example, to nudge the day forward or backward, click or tab to the day of the date and use the + or - keys. Additional shortcuts that work from any part of the Date: T for today's date, Y for today's year, M for today's month of the year, D for today's day of the month, and L for the last date you entered.

Perfect for what I need for small biz, other apps and programs were just too much unnecessary extras I had no use for and quite frankly ridiculously priced.
A couple of things that would make this even better (for me). None are a huge deal but would make it even quicker for me. They would be 1. have the date default to the last date you entered. I enter my data every 10-14 days and have to change the date every time. I’ll usually have several entries on the same date. 2. When you click the enter $ amount box, it should automatically highlight and delete/write over the $0.00 that is present there vs. having to manually highlight or backspace over this for an entry. 3. An audible *ding* would be nice to know an entry was entered and saved. 4. When entering a debit, under the “type" category it would be nice to have “electronic debit” added to the choices. I currently use “online payment” for electronic debit but the addition of the mentioned category would be helpful for me.

To change the default date for new Entries, go to the CheckBook Pro menu at the top left corner of your screen, above all open windows, click the Preferences… menu item to reveal the Preferences window, click the Entry button at the top of the window, look for the When Adding Entries settings near the top of the window, and click the Set Date to Last Entered option. That should be just what you’re looking for.

To select an Amount to over-type it, double-click it. Tabbing to Amount also does the trick. You might also enable the When Adding Entries -> Select Amount First setting, right above the Set Date to Last Entered setting. That’ll select the entire Amount and you can over-type from there.

We’ll think on the ding idea. That’s the kind of thing that needs a preference.

To manage the Types in a particular Account, go to the Account menu, above all open windows, click the Edit Account… menu item to reveal a sheet of Account options, then click the Types button at the top of the sheet. You can add, change, or remove from there, as well as set default Types for new Deposits and Debits.
