Guided Cooking and Smart Bar
- Smart bar will tell you what’s cooking, the live temperature of the device, target temperature of the device, cooking status, timer
- On the recipe, it will say “active” on top if you’re in the middle of making it – you can still navigate away, and when you return it will say “active” again
- On the recipe, it will narrate the steps and what percentage you’re on – for instance it will say 10% done preheating
- On the recipe, it will automatically say what temperature the recipe requires, and on that step, you can instantly set your device to that temperature.
Ratings and Reviews
The equipment: Awesome, the app: Not so much
I had no issues connecting to my sous vide cooker and setting up the wireless. It will show real time readouts of the unit’s current temp. But the big issue I have with this app is the timer. For some reason this app will not keep sync with the timer. If I walk into another room and check the app, the timer won’t be counting. I have to go look at the sous vide cooker to see the timer’s current status. Seems weird that the sous vide cooker is connected WiFi and it can’t keep the timer going with the cooker?? I’m also not a fan of the recipe part. It’s nice if you haven’t started cooking but just looking at a recipe changes settings on your cooker. You should be able to look through the recipes while cooking other things. A simple “start cook” button could fix that.
All in all it does work to control the cooker but I’d say Chefman needs to spend some time to make this a more solid, fully functional app.
Unfinished, but a good start
This app seems inspired by ChefSteps Joule replete with short video clips, visual doneness guide, lighthearted quips, etc. Yet, it feels unfinished both in recipe breadth and app functionality. Often the X button is hidden by the video background. I had to tap around randomly to find it so I could close the video and go back to the previous screen.
The remote control panel functions just say “Hey there! Be patient. Soon you will be able to connect to your precision cooker via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth”. At first I thought it just needed additional time to discover and pair, so I waited a little bit and tried again. Instead what it means to say is this feature is not yet implemented. Better idea: don’t have the control option in the first place until it is working or at least in Beta. Confusing.
The hardware itself seems OK... pretty much a shameless clone of the ANOVA precision cooker, except you can’t take the Chefmate apart for cleaning, and it’s a bit noisy/cavitating until the water level is up near the Max line.
Despite the app, we pellet smoked and then Sous Vide cooked up some great pork tenderloin and the next night beef filet mignon. A quick sear in a cast iron skillet finishes. Liquid from the sous vide bag makes a great starting point for a pan sauce. Everyone was blown away with the taste.
This reminds me that the amazing thrills of sous vide as a cooking technique is quite separate from the merits of the equipment itself.
Thank you for trying out our app! As you noted, it is a good start, right! We are in the process of adding more recipes and more functionalities to the app. We frequently update the app to fix any bugs we come across, including the sneaky X button that was hidden by the video background.
Only selected models support the Bluetooth and WiFi version and they are scheduled to hit the stores any time now. Be on the lookout for the RJ39-WIFI model, and take control over your precision cooker like never before!

Best Chicken ever.
First time I used it I came home for lunch and got everything ready. I had fresh chicken breasts. I used some teriyaki marinade. Everything turned on and linked right up to my phone and went back to work. I monitored everything from my phone. Even when the timer expired I wanted it to stay warm till I got home. So I turned it back on. When I got home we finished the sides and then put the chicken in a skillet and quickly browned both sides pouring the sauce back over the plated chicken. It was the most tender and juiciest chicken I’ve ever had. Can’t wait to use it more often. Especially after ordering a steak this last weekend at a steak place. I ordered it medium and got well done. I thought to myself I could have done better.
With Family Sharing set up, up to six family members can use this app.
