Description

Osiyo! Cherokee-owned Thornton Media (www.ndnlanguage.com) presents Cherokee Basic, the first Native American Indian language app available on the iTunes Store. Cherokee (tsalagi) Lite offers Cherokee words, phrases and syllabary entries by native speakers of the Oklahoma Cherokee dialect. Begin learning the beautiful Cherokee language anywhere, anytime from native speakers of the language!

We believe that language revitalization is a numbers game. The more Cherokee speakers that can be produced; the more chance the language has to survive. There are many Cherokees in the US, but not many speakers. I produced this language module with family members (mother, grandmother and aunt) and some friends from the Tahlequah area of Oklahoma. I hope this tool will help to save my endangered language.

Customer Reviews

The first indigenous language app!

I read reviews of some people saying the words are wrong?? There are many ways to say things in the Cherokee language. When an elder was taught a certain way as a child, it sticks to them for life. The not so fluent ones should not tell them what is the right or wrong way to say words.
WOW! This is amazing! I have some Cherokee blood and this is one of the most unique and useful app I can find. The sound quality is really good unlike some other apps I downloaded. Listen to the Message from your teacher, that lady sounds so sweet and genuinely wants you to learn the language. I know there are not many Cherokee speakers left, to learn an endangered language is a life changing experience!

Translation Hinders Fluency

Language Acquisition will always be hindered by providing a translation or gloss in another language such as English. Use Cherokee and only Cherokee, spoken and written (in a Cherokee script, not transliterated), with pictures, sound effects and video to best acquire the language. Picture association is a great way to go. Start simple, with lots of repetition, then keep building up. This will build fluency. There is a great deal of research that shows this to be the case. Language software should be doing this kind of thing. If it's not, you are wasting your time, energy, and resources that could be used for actual fluency-building.

Awesome app!

This app is awesome, I've learned a lot just from the free version. I'm definitely upgrading!
I'm very touched by the meaning of why this app was created. I have Cherokee in my blood, I'm proud to be part of the Cherokee Indian culture. Even though you could look at me and never know that I'm at least 20 percent Cherokee lol. But it means a lot to me for this language to stay alive. I can't wait to learn more.
