Enjoyable.... Until AI cheats

I'm not one to normally review an app, but in this case I'm making an exception. I have to confess I've enjoyed playing this Chess app for a long time on single - the scaled difficulty and undo features were really appealing and allowed me to test new strategies and generally have fun.

However, for the first time the software distinctly cheated. I had played to a point in the game where both sides were down to two rooks, a knight, and a single bishop. Both sides were almost in a stalemate like position, but there were plenty of moves either side could make. As I had positioned one rook into a defensible position next to the opponents king I was surprised when the next move the computer took was to capture said rook, placing the AI king in check.

Thinking this was a fluke, I undid the move. I tried to move the same pawn again, but this time one of my knights mysteriously disappeared. Undo. Tried my move again. King captures illegally again. And again. And again. Finally I get the picture - for one reason or another, I won't be winning this game or be able to learn what I'm doing right or wrong.

Regardless of whether this was a one time problem or a recurring one, this has been a deal breaker for me. I rate this app 2/5 largely because of the reasonable quality but I cannot give it higher when I can't trust the AI. I encourage future users who may be playing this single player against the computer to be cautious and consider other options.

I Play tournament chess at about 1500 level and I love this app!
Especially well done are the graphics. It looks like a real board. Chess master for example has dozens of sets and they are all but one too distracting to play with. This app is far better! Wonderful adjustment for playing strength. I notice a few negative reviews claiming the app does strange things, but I suspect it is more likely they are the ones who do not understand the rules. I use Rybka on my PC to analyze positions, as it is rated over 3200 but it is no fun to always lose. I would give it 10 stars if I could. The only thing I think it could use is a draw offer. It does not seem to recognize draw by insufficient material and we must play on to get the 50 move rule for a draw, but it is my favorite app!

Pawn problem...

I too have experienced a problem where in one player mode my pawn is taken by the opponent as stated in an earlier review. When I advance my pawn to the side of my opponent's pawn, my opponent's pawn then moves diagonally behind my pawn and then removes it as if my pawn was is in a strike position which it was not. I really like the interface and look of the gaming pieces. I also like the variations the game produces when I start each game using the same moves as previously used in other games. In other words... If I start a game using the same moves every time, the opponent/computer uses a different algorithm that keeps things interesting. Thank you for making this game...
