Chirp! Bird Songs USA +

By Spiny Software Ltd

This app is only available on the App Store for iOS devices.

--> For automatic recognition of bird song, see our new app, ChirpOMatic USA! <--

Chirp! has been developed by nature specialists, Spiny Software, to help you learn and identify bird songs.

Listen and learn over 300 bird songs and calls from across mainland USA, with up to 34 seconds of song for each bird, and alternative recordings for some birds. The songs and calls are of the highest quality, most provided by the world-renowned Macaulay Library at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

On first use, Chirp! selects birds for your current location, but then you are free to select any state (or group of states) on the Map Screen, to learn the common species from east to west and north to south. Or you may prefer to select all birds to learn the whole range! Try sorting by song style, so that you can compare birds that hoot and coo, or those with high pitched songs for example. If you are a beginner, sort the birds by commonness, so you can listen to the most common ones first, then move on to less frequent backyard visitors.

Make a shortlist of your favourites so that you can find them quickly (tap the + icon above the image to add birds to your favorites list).

After listening, try the quiz to test your memory. Answer fast to earn a score multiplier and get on the high score table! Experienced birders can use the custom quiz to help distinguish and learn similar songs.

And when you need a rest, try the slideshow feature - choose which birds to include, maybe add background bird song, then simply relax. If you want to continue learning while you relax, switch the voiceover on and hear the name of the bird announced at the end of each clip. This is also a good way of competing with the family - who can say the name of the bird first?

Very helpful!

Definitely helpful in learning process. Could add more mnemonics and also taxonomic orders - including showing that info in slideshow and quiz views. Also would be very helpful if you could have multiple lists (rather than just "all" and "favorites" - you could then more easily focus on difficult calls/songs, regions or families.

I love this app!

I've had this app forever, from when it was free. Sadly the free version no longer works, but I'm willing to pay for this app. I have several cats, and one of them hates bird songs! This app is too realistic for her, she's absolutely certain that there are birds in my phone. A+!

I really enjoy this app

Very easy to use and helpful. I am able to identify birds easier by sight and sound. It has made me more interested in nature and my surroundings when hiking. T
