Chunky supports CBZ, CBR, CBT and PDF comics, and understands ComicRack and ComicBookLover tags.
It can browse and download directly from iCloud Drive, Dropbox, Transporter, Google Drive, OneDrive, Amazon Cloud Drive, Box, Pogoplug, Mediafire and Copy, and you can copy files in and out with iTunes on your computer or download them via the built-in web browser.
Upgrade to Pro and it'll also connect to Mac or Windows shared folders, FTP or SFTP servers, ComicStreamer, Calibre or Ubooquity libraries, and run a mini web and webDAV server you can use to copy files in and out.
Fixes a couple of bugs introduced in the last update - a crash, and a bug that caused PDF pages to show up blurry.
Ratings and Reviews
Still The Best
Chunky makes me wish I could transfer my non-DRM titles from Dark Horse and Comixology over. While the guided view in those apps I always sort of liked - I prefer to see the whole panel not panels that are cut off - Chunky gives me so many options that I am in Comic viewer bliss now. I was having issues with displaying my PDFs on iBooks, contacted Image Comics about it and was recommended this reader. Now that Comixology allows me to download Image Comics and certain independent titles as PDFs I have been busy transferring them over to Chunky. Along with the others who have reviewed this app, I can not recommend this app enough. Very, very highly recommended.
Update: Not only is this simply the best comic reader by far I have now found a new use for this app, as a digital magazine reader. I bought a digital issue and now am able to use all the functions of Chunky to view the pages the way I want to view them versus fighting the app, Zinio is the guilty app. I now highly recommend Chunky for digital magazine viewing as well.
Great app but ...............................Updated!!
Update: Any information on the new version? I have had a change of thinking and rather welcome an updated app or a completely new one. Even if it’s going to cost me some additional money.
Let me explain my change of heart, I got a Kindle Fire tablet almost a year ago and have been using a few different apps for reading comics. Have not found one that’s better than this app.
If this new app, in your opinion, is better than the current one, I’m in.
Been using this app from the beginning and paid for the premium features right away but now I have some concerns. The latest update mentions a possible new app, possibly urging those who chose to support the developer by purchasing the premium features, to double dip.
This possibility has me rather upset and not willing to excitingly support the developer in the future. Will there, or can there be some safeguards in place for those of us who have supported this developer?
Until I know more of future updates or announcements of a new app, I am sticking with the above rating.
I haven't get figured out how to handle this, to be honest. The rewrite, if I ever ship it, will start off with a lot fewer features and a totally different UI, so I can't just replace the existing app without making lots of people rightly upset.
Probably if I do ship it as a new app, it'd start as cheap as possible and work it's way back up to $4. I'd love to just share the purchase with Chunky so existing users don't have to pay again, but it's technically tricky, and the rules are unclear about whether it's allowed at all.
I'd hate for users to feel like I'm trying to milk them, and I hate having that feeling myself. For what it's worth I once tried dividing the time I put into Chunky by the money I made, and it worked out that the time would've been more profitably spent flipping burgers :)
Good, but there is room for improvement
Once I lost the ability to use ComicRack, I searched for an app that could come close. Based upon reviews and limited use, Chunky stood out as the likely replacement. Since I use an iPad Pro and like to travel with a large number of comics stored, I was happy that Chunky did a nice job displaying the comics that I loaded. I even went as far as buying the full version, even though functionally that was not necessary as the free features were adequate.
Pros: Excellent clarity, Auto-sorting, Cloud Access, Reads all formats,
Cons: Lags when a large collection is loaded, Auto-sort could be better as the grouping vs series is not 100%, No options to change view, e.g. tiled so as to fit more on the screen, No folder synchronization
