Sid Meier’s Civilization VI, winner of 15 E3 awards including Best Strategy Game, is the next entry in the popular Civilization franchise, which has sold in over 35 million units worldwide, including more than 8 million units of Civilization V.

Originally created by legendary game designer Sid Meier, Civilization is a turn-based strategy game in which you attempt to build an empire to stand the test of time. Become Ruler of the World by establishing and leading a civilization from the Stone Age to the Information Age. Wage war, conduct diplomacy, advance your culture, and go head-to-head with history’s greatest leaders as you attempt to build the greatest civilization the world has ever known.

Civilization VI offers new ways to engage with your world: cities now physically expand across the map, active research in technology and culture unlocks new potential, and competing leaders will pursue their own agendas based on their historical traits as you race for one of five ways to achieve victory in the game.

Awaiting Mid-Cycle Upgrade

I’ve played every Civilization game on a Mac since Civ 2, and the only version I truly hated was Civ III. This iteration ranks a little behind Civ V pre-Gods & Kings Expansion.

I think this is the most intuitive Civ refresh in a long time—the jump from IV to V was a lot harder to get used to than V to VI. A lot of the concepts are solid. I quickly got the hang of zones and rather like it as an overall concept that adds to make a better game. Oddly enough, zones tends to simplify game play rather than make it more complex. Splitting advancements between technology and culture is also a solid change—unfortunately, the two are not so independent from each other that you can allow one to languish in favor of the other. Religion continues to refine nicely.

Given the solid bones, I’m somewhat shocked that the game isnt more fun. Unlike prior editions, I voluntarily turn off the game after an hour or two. I have yet to look up at the clock and wonder where the prior four hours had gone. Maybe that is a good thing for family and social life, but it makes me wonder what is missing.

What Civ VI really needs is it’s own version of Gods & Kings, which will transform it from a solidly built game to an immersively fun experience. I’m confident such an update will (eventually) be ready. Until then, I recommend that you get the game and enjoy the new elements to the Civ universe.

Please fix bugs

I can run the game quite smoothly with no significant crash. And I pretty much enjoy the game. However, though I understand it is impossible to be bug-free, but I really have problems with a few big bugs. For example, after Nubia patch, the tech and civic popups randomly stop showing upon completion after a few turns of playing, and that’s really annoying and ruins the game experience. I believe this bug exists also in the PC version so the developer should have already known of it before releasing the Mac OS version. But they do nothing with this huge bug and release the buggy patch anyway. And two months have passed and they still do nothing to fix it. I’m so disappointed with this kind of attitude. This kind of attitude is the thing that destroys otherwise a great game.

Many bugs and poor AI

I bought this game at full price and even some DLC. I am very dissapointed that my $60+ game is basically unplayable even a full year after launch. The AI doesn’t cross water, the AI doesn’t build planes, The AI refuse to form alliances, the religion screen is messed up, the AI never upgrade their troops, and after a few turns of playing, the notifications for researching a new technology/cultural policy stop popping up. Why are you charging $60 for a game that is lacking in critcal components? I expect lots of updates to come soon and I expect these issues to be resolved soon. This game has so much potential and it is a shame that these issues have not been resolved after over a year since the launch of the game.
