Classical Archives, the largest classical music site in the world, offers two methods to play/explore classical music on its mobile application:
1) Library: (The Greats -or- by Composer Search) which offers all the works we have by each composer. Once you select a work, you can select what performance of that work you want to listen to.
2) Must Know: (By Composer -or- by Period & Genre) which is a list selected by our musicologists of the ~800 most important works of classical music you'll want to be familiar with. Selecting a work will always play the performance from the latest release (as opposed to The Library where you can select the performance.)
3) Playlists: (Featured and Mine) allows you to listen to featured playlists or to create, and listen to, your own. Up to 4 hour-long playlists are allowed. Subscriber account at Classical Archives is required.
Depending on your Classical Archives' status (visitor, member or subscriber), you have complete access to all the complete tracks and works or you may only listen to clips of each track. There is no limit to the number of tracks or works you can play.
This app offers a queuing player: you may enter a complete symphony plus a full opera if you wish. But there is one limit: you may add several works and tracks to the player only as long as the current queue doesn't already contain 20 or more tracks. Each time a track is played, it is removed from the queue and the count goes down.
What's New in Version 2.1
- Minor Fix (Not using accessToken)
If you try to jump to any selection in your queue, the app crashes. This is a problem because the limited search function means that you cannot select individual pieces of music (movements, for example); you must add the “entire” piece to your queue (whatever the app thinks is the “entire” piece). I contacted tech support and they said this is a known problem. Unfortunately, it makes this app, and therefore their service, unusable. (@margaretamartin)
I want to like this app
But it is crashing every time I try to skip to next item in the queue on my iPhone.
bad user experience
Crashes constantly, deleting queue. Terrible incredibly frustrating user experience. Cannot edit or add to playlists as you can on the website. Cannot listen to non-featured playlists other than your own as you can on the website. No playback features. Once songs are played they are removed from the queue so you cannot re-listen. What other music app is like this? Compare functionality to Spotify, Pandora, even soundcloud etc apps, and it’s clear there is so much room for improvement - especially given that this is a paid subscription service. Also, why in the world does the iTunes store delete your entire review if your alias has already been taken? Totally ridiculous, this is my fourth time typing this review.
