What's New in Version 2.7.5
• Minor Enhancements
App 5 stars, Content 2 stars
CNN has devolved into tabloid rather than investigative journalism. It obsesses over homicides and plane crashes, sometimes running the same basic thread for months.
In politics its own punditry creates its own orbit that never quite is willing to address the real bread and butter realities that
disenfranchise voters. It's politics is a weird left and right wing blend that on the surface is preferable to the extremes of Fox News and the Huffington post but in reality leaves you less nourished than drinking lite beer.
CNN is also too video centric for the Web. People that like to read rather than watch the news will prefer the Associated Press (AP) app.
The videos also autoplay both here and in the CNN web site. That intrusive and bandwidth consuming practice should be illegal.
The app is little more than Adware which is tripped by any normal navigation. You will likely not be able read a single story without hitting an ad that throws you out of the app into a web browser. It's this more than anything that compels me to give it a single star review.
All video likewise begins with an ad. And there often the same ad over and over again.
Over the last several months CNN has all but removed commenting capability and links to social networking are an afterthought. You can still follow CNN on Twitter and Facebook but the app itself does not allow for your conversation.
News is News. No one should get all news from from one news source.
CNN does their job better than many. I have no complaints with the iPhone CNN App I use.
I feel they "report" the story and not "sell" the story. Others just "sell" the story and not "report" it (Faux News Channel selling Iraq War, not reporting it). Americans can't really expect what "News" used to be. So we take a load from several outlets and average out the body counts and times and numbers and dates and impacts. Since they all vary widely in details of supposed finite events. Since they all rush to be first instead of rush to be correct. Every one has flopped that royally.
But for me, I'll keep with CNN.
Ads are way too large (especially self promoting ones for Anthony Bourdain who I do find great) and now the stories are even more limited and the stories stay the same for much longer. How does CNN allow stories to linger in each section for days, and so few! Also to watch a video makes you hostage to the same commercial with no option to skip or at least change it up. I would rather pay for news and not have stale stories filled with the same ads for videos. As a colleague said: when I'm forced to watch the same ad over and over I am not drawn closer to that product, I begin to harbor ill will towards it.
