What's New in Version 2.7.3
- Apple Watch improvements
CNN is now available on Apple Watch. Get up-to-the-minute breaking news across 12 personalized categories - from Top Stories and Health to Entertainment and Politics. Tap to open a story; then choose to save it or continue reading on your phone. You can even launch live CNN TV on your phone, right from your watch.
App 5 stars, Content 2 stars
If you just want headlines with a kind of Fox-lite conservative filter this is your app. Except for a few notable bright spots CNN sadly has lost its founder's way of doing investigative journalism to mere punditry. Get the Associated Press (AP) app and you'll see the difference.
The app is a dramatic improvement over prior versions. You can find news organized in many different sections and unlike the web app (which still has this problem) it's no longer blasting autoplay video at you when you open news stories.
Over the last several months CNN has all but removed commenting capability and links to social networking are an afterthought. You can still follow CNN on Twitter and Facebook but the app itself does not allow for conversation.
Ada are more annoying than similar apps
When you scroll through a story and your thumb goes anywhere near one of the ads that takes up nearly the entire screen (making it unavoidable), the ad launches in a new window. For this reason I will no longer follow CNN news on my phone. That is not a professional way to treat your audience.
The app frequently gets stuck opening ads or videos and then I have to wait until the app reboots itself to use it. Also, the home page tends to have multiple versions of the same story, which is unnecessary and obnoxious.
