What's New in Version 2.7.7
This update contains minor enhancements.
Good but needs a few improvements
I open the app everyday to get updated on the latest news. It's great. I am a daily user. It's my main source of news. In general I prefer CNN over the other news stations. But some pet peeves about the app: I'll get an iPhone notification of a news headline. I click on the notification to read more. The app opens but it just shows me the homepage. It doesn't open up the article belonging to the headline that I got an iPhone notification for. In fact, the article and headline are nowhere to be found on the app. I don't like being teased with a headline and there's no story to read behind the headline. Pet peeve #2: Some of their articles in the other sections are there for days, even weeks. At that point you're not getting new news, just old content. Old content should be removed from the app faster. Pet peeve #3: The app has too many video articles. I prefer to read news, not watch it. I'm busy and I can finish and/or skim a news article faster than it takes a video to play the segment. I get impatient having to watch a video that presents information slower than I can absorb through reading.
Advertising piece of junk!
I don't know about you, but I'm way past being aggravated by all the advertising crap you're forced to sit through just to view a short video. The CNN app now goes a step further by effectively hijacking your device and taking you to an advertiser's website whenever you're unfortunate enough to touch one of their banners. This can easily happen while attempting to scroll through an article, or view a news video. That would be annoying in itself, but the real issue is there's no way to get back to CNN. You're effectively stuck on the advertiser's website from that point on. Sure, you can close the app, shut off your device, do whatever, but the next time you launch the app you're right back on the advertiser's site. The only way to get back to CNN is to delete and reinstall the program. I've done this twice and for the last time. The app has now been permanently deleted from my device in favor of the AP news app, which still has advertising crap, but at least it works.
Where is it CNN?
The app is good, but there are a LOT of articles that aren't in the opinion section which are very opinionated. One example is on today's home page entitled "Tax the poor!" It focuses on states raising tax from, using the Kansas example, 6.15 to 6.5%. Is this author serious? European countries have sales taxes, known as VAT from 17-23%. 6.5? Stop whining. It actually costs money to repair roads, call out the snow plows, rescue folks from flash floods, pay police and fire departments, and schools not to mention maintain government buildings, infrastructure like water and electricity grids, national guard. States need money to survive just like people. It comes from tax revenue!
Income tax in Europe and Australia is 50%. So when you pay, 13, 15 % you can stop whining about that too.
Perhaps your journalist should move to Europe and pay out all those taxes, plus 6-10 dollars a gallon for gas.
