Customer Reviews

Idea = 5 Stars, Implementation = 1 Star

First let me say that I love the idea of this App! If things were to work as they should, I could definitely use this app as my only text editor. Unfortuanetly, the two biggest selling points for me (Autocompletion and Clips) are buggy and incomplete. There are so many PHP functions that simply aren’t available (for example, mysqli_real_escape_string())—should I really have to type all of that out? And functions from included files won't autocomplete either. As if that wasn’t enough, constants likewise won’t autocomplete. Like some other reviews out there have mentioned, I feel they’re deceptive as to exactly what autocompletion will and won’t do, and it would have been really nice to know that beforehand.

Clips are just as frustrating! While they can do many things easily and well, when they don’t work, it just doesn’t matter. Try typing a “//“ on a placeholder and you’ll get "</>/“ to start your comment off with. When you type a clip shortcut on a placeholder you get bumped to the next placeholder if there is one.

Apart from these problems, I can see working with Coda 2. I just feel like it was a developer’s version of Final Cut X, not ready to be released and who knows when it will be updated, or if they’ll just come out with a Coda 3, forcing you to buy an upgrade.

Front end devlopment is a breeze

I have been using Coda 2 for about 6 months, and it has been a great experience ever since. I use this mainly for front end development because it is effortless to see what changes are being made in real time. I like to set up my HTML file to the far left, set up a preview window in the middle, and my CSS file to the far right. I can add HTML elements or adjust the CSS and it updates my preview window on the fly without having to switch between multiple windows/files.

Something else to note about Coda 2 is the long list of user-created plugins that are availalbe that make time consuming or tedious tasks extremely simple. If you haven’t check them out, do so! They will make you like Coda 2 even more.

I couldn’t be happier with this program. I would suggest anyone, beginner or expert, to get this program.

Powerful, succinct, enjoyable.

I’d used Coda before at work, but was skeptical to shell out the money and buy it for myself because of all the low reviews at the time. Thankfully, I had no need to worry! It’s been a pleasure to work with it so far.

Also, check out Panic’s 20 hints on using Coda. I particularly like the three-column workflow for HTML, Preview, and CSS.

It’s a good enough product that I thought, “You know, I need to write them a nice review.” What more can I say?
