Ratings and Reviews

I don’t know how many times I’ve complained to the thin air that designers seem to be totally unaware that colorblindness exists. But I hardly have to care anymore—because ColorCompass lets me in on the secret. My sincere thanks to the developers for 1.) BEING AWARE that most UX designers are either ignorant, lazy, or just don’t care about this diaability, and 2.) FOR DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT! GO COLORCOMPASS!

Paid for itself the first time I used it

Overall, highly recommend ColorCompass. It is exactly what I was looking for without the bloat of most color apps. If you have color vision deficiency, this app is a great find. I’ve worked as a digital artist for many years and this app would have saved me tons of time.

This app should come standard on every computer. But it doesn’t, so drop the 3 bucks and get it now!

* Small footprint - doesn’t use much space or RAM
* Easy on, easy off - can leave the app open and only access when needed
* Named colors - this is HUGE. Many apps offer the Hex or the RGB values, but do not give the actual color
* Simplified color names - People often cannot agree on color names, especially the fancy ones. This app simply tells you where the selected color falls in the spectrum; the values help you narrow it down. For example: “salmon" can be anywhere from a pale pinkish-orange to a light pinkish-gray. This app lets you know exactly what you are looking at.
* Conveniently copy values to the clipboard.

* Depending on your settings (e.g. HSB), not all the values are visible in Advanced Mode when hovering (but are still accessible by clicking)
* My wife has noticed some green where the named color is brown. Then again, I hear people argue about browns with green in them or greens that are brownish all the time.
* While there is access in the Menu Bar, you cannot close the app window, even when not in use. To get rid of the app window, you have to quit the app. Would be great if you could toggle visibility of the app from the Menu Bar. Not a deal breaker, since the app is small, but it seems like an intuitive option.

Developer Response

Thanks for the detailed review, that's really helpful!
Just wanted to let you know, that we took advantage of the High Sierrra update to add a "Hide" window option in the Menu Bar. We hope this is what you were looking for :) It's available in our 1.13 release.
