What's New in Version 1.4
> Scenario Expansion Pack #1
> Optimizations for smoother gameplay
> Minor bug fixes
I have bought most of Battlefront's "Combat Mission" series of games for the PC since 2004. I was delighted to see their entry in a touch screen game for the iPod and iPhone. I have enjoyed playing it immensely. I look forward to seeing more from them in this format.
This is the only serious tactical simulation game for the touch screen I have found. There are many arcade-type war games with so many simplifications I can't take them seriously. If you want to have a satisfying experience with a WWII tactical game, this is the ticket. All the other stuff is "Angry Birds" with guns.
Right now this version of the Battlefront tactical simulation does not give you the tremendous variety of their standard series. This is just the beginning! To have a system which gives you the realism of the standard games on the touch screen is what matters. If you want to see what three hull-down Pz IVs can do to an American-held village from a position of advantage from a hill top, this is for you. If you want to play a toylike RTS tank game with a lot of loud explosions and vehicles moving pell mell in all directions, you won't like this game.
Very good, but not quite great
As a fan of the old desktop Combat Mission, I wanted to love the iPad version. But it turned out to be less than it could be. The biggest issue is the lack of useful instructions; all you get is a linked video. It’s amusing, but not very informative about the game mechanics, which are relatively complex. Veterans of desktop CM will find that some of their prior knowledge will fill this gap, but if this is your first experience with CM, you’ll probably be lost — and get walloped. An issue for experienced players will be the loss of some familiar orders (no crawl, no smoke, command and control, or line of sight, for instance). The game also has a few bugs. Fresh troops may fail to respond to your orders for no apparent reason, or be completely un-selectable. The game will quit occasionally, forcing you to reload the scenario you were playing. The interface lacks some easily-acheivable polish and clarity. This sadly is typical for Battlefront… they get to the verge of greatness, but don’t go the extra mile to get there. This version is worth the $4.99, but it could be so much better — and I for one would have paid more for it. And no instructions? Come on!
Great Game with Annoying Kinks
I really enjoy this game, and anyone who enjoys combat scenarios will as well, but there are a few things that need to be worked:
1.) I think we all agree when I say that the troops are a bit sketchy. They walk out into the crossfire regularly, disregard commands when shot at, and generally don't have that deadly aim like in real life. Maybe you could think about adding wounded soldiers and part time medics to make it more realistic. Give it some grit.
2.) The tank dynamics are amazing when it comes to bouncing, penetrating, and harmless hits, but most other explosions are weak. If an artillery shell hits the middle of the squad, it won't just obliterate the person it lands on. That's an artillery shell, not a bean bag.
3.) Finally, the players just don't feel that combative grit that was clearly prevalent in WWII. Include knives, wounds, ballistic body slinging, and you know we need some spare grenades to blow those bunkers in Normandy, yes, thank you.
In conclusion, you have made a good game, but you're aren't finished. Now schell!
