This is the war that ended peace, in a continent where great leaders had to lead their countries to victory at all cost. And you are that leader.

Commander The Great War is a turn-based strategy game that captures this time of war with unprecedented realism and accuracy. A huge-hex based campaign map that stretches from the USA in the west, Africa and Arabia to the south, Scandinavia to the north and the Urals to the east, is the setting for 5 grand campaigns, each starting in a different year of the war.

You are confronted with all possible strategic and tactical decisions, from logistics to diplomacy, from deployment to combat. Every aspect of the war is in your hands in a gaming experience with no precedent on the iPad. Commander the Great War is a game for strategy fans, for history buffs and for anyone who’s looking for a deep, immersive gaming experience.

The game includes:
*5 Grand Campaigns: 1914 The Great War, 1915 Ypres – Artois, 1916 The Battle of Verdun, 1917 The Nivelle Offensive and 1918 The Kaiserschlacht.
*Over 40 unique historical and “what-if” events triggered by conditions on the campaign-map.
*18 different unit types including Infantry, Cavalry, Armoured Cars and Tanks, Artillery, Railroad Guns and Armoured Trains, Cruisers, Submarines and Battleships, Fighters, Bombers and Airships. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses, based on their historical performance in the various theatres throughout the war.
*Historical Commanders, each with their own specific strengths, so decide wisely which Commander is most suited to which front. Three types of Commanders are available: Generals for ground units, Admirals at sea and flying Aces to strengthen your air units.
*Research and technology to improve units. Aircraft evolve from fragile tools of aerial observation to deadly ground and air attack planes. Artillery barrages become ever more accurate and powerful. Armour technology unleashes a dreadful new weapon on the battlefield: the Tank.
*Detailed and realistic combat that models supply, morale, terrain, leadership, equipment, training and fog of war.
*Cross platform multiplayer via PBEM++ server system.

A Great Game - update review

Not for a casual war gamer. This is very difficult, especially for Central Powers. Extremely fun and plays slightly different each time. You have to have a grand strategy on land, air, and sea to win (As Germany anyway). I'll replay now that it has significant upgrades and re-review.
After re-playing the game is now much easier for the central powers. Austria - Hungry now can hold its own and Germany is much stronger at the outset. Also France will surrender if you can capture Paris within one year, instead of fighting to the literal last man as it use too. From the Allied side the game is pretty much the same except for repositioning of starting units and a slight toning down of Russian strength.

IPad Wargame Strategy At Its Best

It's amazing to see a game like this, that just a few years ago would have required a desktop PC to play, on the iPad .

The whole breath of the European theater is mapped, including Iraq. Hex based and research and production are all there. Multiple land, sea, air unit types roam the map.

AI is excellent, arguably the best I've seen in a military strategy game. It will falter, like all AI's (and human generals), when you penetrate behind front lines in force. But if the front lines are typical WWI, the computer will launch intelligent attacks and logical defenses.

There is a multiplayer option.

Unit density is relatively low, and turns move fairly quickly (and there are 118 in the Grand Campaign scenario).

A blast to play for grognards. Not for the casual gamer.

Extremely bad AI

Black Bellamy

Worst AI I have ever seen in a hex-based wargame. The AI will place artillery and planes on the front line, send precious surface fleets to attack piecemeal against incredible odds, and is incapable of any sort of strategic or even operational offensive. As the CP it actually abandons the Western Front to send German armies to attack Serbia (ineffectually). You can just keep hitting End Turn for the first two months of the game as the Entente without moving a single piece and the CP still will perform horribly. Once your side has a line of armies it's all over for the AI as it will never break through. When I play as the CP the French will shuffle units and leave Verdun or Calais empty. Sigh.
