Ratings and Reviews

Genuinely disappointed

Expat in Korea

I am not writing this to exact "revenge" but simply to advise new possible purchasers that my experience of the app has been dismal. Quite frankly it just doesn't work. I don't understand how it got onto the app store. Surely for an app to be available for sale it needs to work in practice and not just theory. I also don't understand how in today's age an app like this does not work. I found that even when it did work(about one out of every 10 tries) the translation was so poor that it didn't leave me with any greater understanding. For the record I was translating Korean into English, via the camera, in good lighting, with no curvature etc. etc. It was a waste of the $2+ dollars I spent. If you are considering the purchase don't buy it. I am not sure if there are any better options, as I have tried one other with very similar results. If anyone has found an app that does work please advise.

Very Impressed With Communilator Pro! (Changing Previous Low-Score Review)

I cannot find the one-star review I submitted only one day ago (perhaps it's not yet been "approved" by Apple?). If I could find and change it, I would!

Revised review:
Communilator Pro has thus far handled every text translation I've thrown at it -- primarily English to Spanish and English to Russian. ..and the "Listen" function demonstrates how the translated text should sound. Very impressive!

I can't wait to try out the photo translation during forthcoming international travel.

I originally had problems getting "Listen" (Text-To-Speech) feature to speak text that I'd translated. The issue was that my iPad 3's mute button was engaged (duh!). Note that iPad still showed max volume and suggested in every other way that sound should work, but it didn't. Check the button!

Extra-special plus: I visited Communilator's website and emailed their tech support address with details of my issue. Ken from RantNetwork replied within 2 hours and continued an email thread that eventually solved my issue. Excellent support!

Interesting photo feature but overall so-so

Update: discovered why the photo function doesn't always work in's because Google services are often unreliable here unless you use a VPN. My suggestion to the developer is to add the option to choose Bing translation (like iTranslate); even though I dislike Bing immensely, it doesn't get blocked in China.

Another annoying thing about this app is that it doesn't remember the previous translation setup i.e. Chinese to English. It's one of those things that makes me not want to open the app. I still use Google Translate app as my primary.

Update: getting better photo results lately, no idea why. Used the camera at a Chinese restaurant (in China) today and it worked pretty well over a 3G connection. I still think that the Google Translate app is better for the core functions because it has phonetic and voice control. If Communilator adds these functions, well...then they will be the killer translate app.

The other functions of this app are similar to other apps such as iTranslate.
