Fun, but...

As someone who has only played the Wii version of Cooking Mama, I was glad to be able to play a version without buggy motion controls. The controls are responsive and, compared to the Wii title, much more straightforward. The failure animations can be very funny--when making a virtual pizza, I accidentally sent the dough flying through the ceiling, much to my amusement. I find the game very enjoyable, but I do have a few gripes.
First off, the game is too forgiving. The only way to get less than 3 stars is to run out of time. And, while the game does get stringent with time with higher difficulties, the game still gives you enough time to complete everything if you know what you're doing.
Secondly, the minigames seem out of place and don't really give you anything. The restaurant minigame is a fun one to have up while you're doing something else, but the fishing minigame is horribly boring. You don't really unlock anything for playing the minigames, you just get some already easy to get "happy foods."
Finally, the game tries to incentivize microtransactions (which is something I'm more than used to), but it ends up being more annoying than anything. To make most of the recipes, you need "happy foods," which the game expects you to pay for but are almost TOO easy to get. I can say with confidence that it's the most pointless paid content in a game I've ever seen in a free to play game.

It’s fun if you know what you’re getting into

I like this game, a lot. It’s like the DS games to a T, maybe a little harder so it’s not for people who don’t have experience with the game. However sometimes the gameplay can be a bit liberal, I know that you can be noticeably off and it’ll give you a Perfect anyway, and sometimes it doesn’t leave your mistakes and lets you try again if you mess up. But this game is for kids younger than the target age for the previous games and new players, so it’s understandable. The restaurant mode is like diner dash without the stress, and you don’t lose points when new people can’t enter your restaurant. But yes, the restaurant is only open for a certain amount of time a day. There are other things to do but I don’t think it counts towards unlocking recipes. Speaking of that, I’ve heard that you can now unlock recipes through the restaurant mode, and the recipe packs aren’t really that expensive so I’ll be thinking about getting them eventually. Anyway, don’t let the negative reviews turn you off if you really want the game! It really is fun once you get the hang of it.
