About Cook’s Illustrated
Cook’s Illustrated, launched in 1993, is located just outside Boston where a team of more than three dozen test cooks, editors, and cookware specialists work in a 2,500-square-foot test kitchen. Our mission is to test recipes over and over again until we understand how and why they work and until we arrive at the “best” version of a particular recipe.
We start the process of testing each recipe with a complete lack of conviction, which means that we accept no claim, no theory, no technique, and no recipe at face value. We simply assemble as many variations as possible, test half a dozen of the most promising, and taste the results blind. We then construct our own hybrid recipe and continue to test it, varying the ingredients, techniques, and cooking times until we reach a consensus. The result, we hope, is the best version of a particular recipe, but we realize that only you can be the final judge of our success (or failure). As we like to say in the test kitchen, “We make the mistakes so you don’t have to.”
Along with developing recipes, our test kitchen team exhaustively tests kitchen equipment and does blind tastings of supermarket ingredients to tell home cooks which brands to buy…and which to avoid. More than one million Cook’s Illustrated readers rely on Cook’s Illustrated reviews to make smarter decisions about which cooking products and ingredient brands to buy.
Cook’s Illustrated recipes, testings, and tastings can be found in Cook’s Illustrated magazine and cookbooks, online at CooksIllustrated.com, or featured on our public television show, America’s Test Kitchen.
What's New in Version 2.0.2
We fixed a recipe display issue.
Poor functionality. Not for "serious cooks."
I have this app on my iPad and it clearly needs more development. Not really sophisticated enough for streamlined use. Some of the problems: the app can only be viewed in portrait mode so if you have a iPad case that stands your iPad up in landscape (which is handy for in the kitchen!) this app won't work that way. Another total design flaw is that the recipe is organized in tabs with the ingredients and instructions on different tabs. So if you're measuring things out as you go or you want to doublecheck your measures in the recipe you have to keep going between tabs which can be annoying especially if your hands are covered in flour or raw eggs or what have you. These are only two of many other flaws that beg for improvement. Is this app for cooks? Not really. Shame on you, CI. The website and magazine are much more superior layout you would think a home run app would follow. Not.
Way overdue for an update
I use this app frequently to access my "favorites" and to create a shopping list for my favorites. It could be so much better. I've saved 50+ favorites but they cannot be organized into any categories or even listed alphabetically. That would be first upgrade. Organizing recipes into a menu would be second. Shopping list is very basic, but does allow easy editing to remove ingredients that you might typically have on hand, like salt or water. Oh, and you have to have Internet access to retrieve your favorites or any other recipes. I would love to rate this a 4 or 5 star. The recipes are so well tested and fail-proof.
Very good app, could use an update, but works well
I'm surprised with some of the negative reviews here. This is a great app. Yes it looks a bit old and would be even better with an update. But, it allows me to access all the recipes I would normally get from the Cooks Illustrated website - I can save them for reference on my phone. PLUS, the ability to add a recipe to your shopping list is fantastic. You can simply do so twice to double the portions and it automatically doubles everything on your list.
I'm really pleased with the app. Yes it could be newer but I've had no bugs.
