Crimson: Steam Pirates

In Crimson: Steam Pirates, plumes of black smoke fill the blue Caribbean sky as Thomas Blood’s pirate fleet steams ahead—over, above, and below the waves. On the surface, ships bristle with swivel cannons and lightning guns. Above, zeppelins drip with incendiary bombs. And below, silent and deadly, submarines stalk their targets, torpedoes at the ready.

Command your fleet and your Steampunk crew using an elegant action interface. Crimson: Steam Pirate’s turn-based gameplay provides an addicting mixture of strategy and action as you anticipate your enemies’ moves and counter them, luring them into a deadly hail of weapons fire while uncovering the mystery brewing in the Caribbean.

Crimson: Steam Pirates features:

• 8 free-to-play voyages begin the tale of Thomas Blood’s adventures in the Caribbean
• Chapters 2 & 3 feature a total of 16 additional voyages that complete the tale, available as in-app purchases
• 2 “Pass-and-Play” multiplayer scenarios
• Over a dozen types of ships, subs, and airships
• Over 20 unique crew members whose special abilities enhance gameplay

Presented by Bungie Aerospace and conceived by the mind of Harebrained Schemes' Jordan Weisman, creator of the MechWarrior, Crimson Skies, and Shadowrun universes.

I enjoyed this game, although it was too short

This was an enjoyable, well-designed game. The back story added a great deal to keeping the player deep into the game. The characters were fun and interesting, and each level was a new mini-adventure for the pirate and his crew.

I only have a couple of complaints about this game. The first, and biggest, complaint is the length of the game. I was able to finish all three chapters in one and one-half days. And given that the second two chapters required additional purchases, that was mildly annoying. My second complaint was how rigid the gameplay was. If you lose a ship, the level is lost and you must begin again. It seems to me that the game should continue with the player trying to finish with fewer ships.

In any case, I really enjoyed playing this game. I'm going to go back and try to better my score.

Really good game with a surprisingly fun story that doesn't take itself too seriously, and uses several historical figures to good effect (Mark Twain using his riverboat piloting skills to help you navigate shallow water in a large ship for instance). It's unfortunate that it seems abandoned, with both harebrained studios and bungie aerospace having gone completely silent on any kind of extra content or sequel since the last update in 2011, as a a full featured multiplayer mode (online, fleet builder, etc) would have made this one of the best iOS games ever. I'd gladly pay for several more single player campaigns too. Don't give up on this franchise guys! I don't give out 5 star reviews easily, but I enjoyed what is available for this game thoroughly.

Very impressive

An excellent game. Very detailed, clever, and flavorful. Steam punk piracy at its finest. Sepia tone images, steam punk flourishes aplenty, and an enjoyable storyline with well-defined characters. You're not just sailing a ship, your leading a crew and trying to one-up the other pirate captains. It's very satisfying.

The mechanics of sailing and fighting are great. I was quite pleased at how intuitive they made all that potentially complicated business about how a ship moves, without straying from the physics and reality of it. The interface is great. Everything is really easy to understand, and well explained. Turn-based course plotting keeps it all manageable and very tactical, and sometimes the enemy ships can really surprise you.

Boarding mechanics really impressed me as well. Boarding parties could have been a tacked-on mini game or completely automated, but instead they made it an elegant and natural outgrowth of all the other elements of the game, with meaningful decisions for the player and tactical options derived from exactly which characters are aboard your ship. It's brilliantly executed.

Over all this is a well-crafted, thoroughly enjoyable game.
