Description

The Chinese Character Trainer app from Clavis Sinica teaches you to write Chinese characters. The app uses attractive stroke animations to show you how each character is formed, one stroke at a time. It then invites you practice writing the character yourself on the touchscreen, and gives you immediate feedback on every stroke you draw.

You can use the app in three different modes. Training mode displays the outline of each character, shows you how to draw it, lets you practice as many times as you want, and even gives you hints if you get stuck.

Drill mode works like a flashcard deck, prompting you to draw each character in turn, and returning to the deck those characters you get wrong.

Test mode gives you one chance to draw correctly all the characters in a deck and then reports your overall score, so you can measure your progress over time.

Version 1.7 gets you started writing Chinese with a deck of over 200 of the most commonly used characters. The characters are taken from from Lessons 1-7 of the Stepping Stones eTextbook on the Clavis Sinica website, which provides basic reading texts, exercises, audio recordings, and other learning materials using these characters.

Customer Reviews

Great App

Skweenison

All around great application for learning Chinese characters. You can't go wrong with this, in fact, it's much better than most other programs out there. Strongly recommended, very solid.

Really helpful

Cyclingchica

Great companion to their CS Zika app. I find it very helpful to switch back and forth between the two because it's good to learn characters by recognition (CS Zika) and then learn by actually writing the character (Xiezi).

Great way to learn

Fishoutofshui

The app teaches 48 characters by having you trace them, then later write them on a grid (that you can turn off if you want to totally freehand) as both drills for learning and tests. I really learned these characters well in a short amount of time BUt you will get even more out of it if you go to their website and practice reading the passages that use only characters they've taught you. Great way to practice if you do both, reading and writing. I hope they release more characters soon. The website has stories that teach you the most common 300 characters, if they releast all of them in this app too that would be truly stellar! But the app is great for what it is today. I highly recommend. You can practice anytime you have your phone and a few spare minutes.
