Ratings and Reviews
I am extremely impressed with the quality of these stories so far. I’ve only played the first two but so far the stories are original but still have that otherworldly feeling that Lovecraft manages to convey through his writing. The spot check rolls are random and my character actually died because he failed one! (This only resulted in me needing to restart the story over from the beginning, nothing too harsh.) And finally, the most important thing. I didn’t want to stop reading/playing! This kept my attention, the stories are short enough to be played in one sitting but not to short, and they aren’t so long that they make you stop reading. Every story is the PERFECT length and each story does have references to the previous stories (if you’re playing through on the same character) which definitely adds to the immersion. The first not thing I don’t like about this game is that there’s no option to turn off the music. I’m someone that can’t have distractions while I’m reading and I needed to turn my phones volume off in order to play.
Great game, with a two issues
I love this game. The writing is superb and the characters each have a different feel to them. However, there are issues.
The game is short. The free trial system provides false longevity to an otherwise short game. If the game was more longform, with each episode consisting of 30 minutes to an hour of content; I would be more forgiving of the free trial system. However, the episodes are very short and the threat of death within the first 2 minutes of starting an episode is very real; sending you back to the menu and having to wait another day to get another shot. I would’ve preferred the app itself to cost money and that system removed entirely.
Secondly, the game often crashes when “Checking for updates” at the start. For context, I have an iPhone 7.
I’m not sure whether this game is still under development, but I hope these issues are resolved in future campaigns or updates. I do love this game, and if a patch resolves the crashing, my review will be changed to a 4 stars.
Do you hear the Call?
I’ve been an avid Lovecraft fan for more than three decades, and have played the RPG Call of Cthulhu for almost as long. My kids grew up playing the game with me, and have become fans as well.
I’m giving this game 5 stars for the simple reason that the ambience while playing the game is quite reminiscent & matches that of a multitude of late night pen & paper gaming experiences with family and friends.
I guess the best recommendation I could make would be to give it a try, alone and at night. If the combination of the storyline and sound ambience doesn’t make you uncomfortable (in a good, Lovecraftian sort of way) than I would be quite surprised.
