No More Shuffling Books

The cycle of daily prayer called the Daily Office is one of the great treasures of the Episcopal / Anglican tradition. It has formed the ground for the spiritual lives of countless Christians in and out of this tradition, and it continues to help those seeking a rich, accessible pattern of prayer, scripture, and reflection.

One of the Office's greatest assets is also among the greatest obstacles to newcomers: the breadth of options available to one within the liturgies of Morning Prayer, Noonday Prayer, Evening Prayer, and Compline can be overwhelming. Without guidance, the many rubrics and directions can be confusing to those unused to the particular logic of the Book of Common Prayer.

This complexity, coupled with the need to refer to another text entirely for the readings from scripture while referencing a difficult-to-navigate lectionary can discourage a would-be user of the Daily Office before ever beginning!

The Daily Office app, however, streamlines all this complexity while allowing users to have all of the depth and flexibility of the offices at their fingertips! Seamlessly integrating the prayers, psalms, and selections from scripture for you Daily Office makes praying this ancient cycle of liturgies both beautiful and easy!

Really one of the best out there.

So I will start by saying that I think the app is worth its price point, as the other comparable app as far as price goes, electronic common prayer, contains much more information, but forces you to click through a bunch of links to get to the relevant passages. As such, I like that this particular app allows you to seamlessly move through the office without any flipping for adjusting. Additionally, and this is a huge addition in my opinion, this app allows for the alternative readings to be used. This is something I have not seen on any other app that uses the two-year daily office lectionary. That feature alone makes the app worth it to me.

Great spiritual aid

Alabama Luther

I have been using the app for morning prayer and compline for about four months. I love the ability to tailor each for my own tastes and needs. The app has helped me strengthen my spiritual discipline.

The only complaint I have relates to the number of typographical errors. I guess my OCD is showing, but they distract me from my routine (see repeated words in the second paragraph of the Jubilate, plus sometimes using you when it should have been your, etc.).

Overall, I love the app. It would be even better with some more careful editing. Thanks.

Some major bugs for a $10 app

The biggest and most annoying of these bugs is that the Daily Rite I & II for the evening does not work. It automatically kicks you out of the app. I have deleted and reinstalled it, and it still has the same problem. For now, I switch to Daily Devotion in the evenings (which does work). While I do like the flexibility of the app and the minimalist nature of it, I don’t know if it’s worth the $10 price tag at the moment until it’s working smoothly.
