Warning for 1st gen ipad users!
Please be aware that this game pushes the limits of the ipad 1's capabilities. The game will run, HOWEVER you need to make sure that you save EVERY SINGLE TIME you dock anywhere. Spending too much time in space will max out the memory usage of your ipad 1 and knock you out of the game. Warping frequently seems to help mitigate this, but the inability to save anywhere other than when docked means that you will be forced to replay some sections if you try engaging in combat for too long a period in a crowded sector. Granted, this does not seem to be a consistant problem - I've had the game kick me out in the middle of dogfights where my opponent and I are the only two ships in the sector, and I also managed to play a hijack rescue mission (lots of enemy respawn) in several crowded sectors with no problems. Like I said, warping frequently does seem to mitigate the crash problem. All of my graphic settings are set to the absolute minimum, and music set to lowest volume (supposedly off).
Other than this, I have no real gripes about the game. It's a solid 4x game with plenty of variety, the flexibility of the module system combines well with the adjustable controls and autopilot, and the skill system actually has a noticeable impact on gameplay. I would like more graphics options, though; the ability to turn off space effects like fog would probably get rid of the last of the memory drain experienced by those of us using the ipad 1. Still, crashes are infrequent enough that this game easily earns the 4 star rating.
Discovered potentially game-breaking bug, as well as a workaround. When doing the loyalty mission for Mining Inc (MNE) in sector Hekka, when you warp to the region where the mission takes place, the game does not stop the warp, and you have to exit the game and reload. However, this can be worked around. First, learn and max out the Space Probes skill (either bonus skill or learn from the Dust Jumper's loyalty mission), then scan and locate the wormhole to the Renna system within Washbo (your starting sector). Then, just keep reloading the game until you get the option to do the MNE Loyalty mission in System Hekka/Gate to Renna, and you can get to the mission the long way by going through Proktosh, Sypint, Washbo, and through the wormhole to Renna. Then, if you take the warp gate from Renna to Hekka, you can do the MNE loyalty mission without getting stuck in infinite warp. Took me over an hour to find this workaround, but I can verify it works.
