Dark Sky - Hyperlocal Weather, Radar, and Storm Alerts

By Jackadam

Open iTunes to buy and download apps.

Dark Sky can tell you at a glance exactly when it will rain (or snow) up to an hour in advance, so you’re free to walk the dog or run out to lunch and know you’ll stay dry. You can also explore the most beautiful weather animation you’ve ever seen, both forward in time or back.

(Dark Sky is available in the US, UK and Ireland.)

Using GPS, Dark Sky is able to create forecasts for your precise location, giving you minute-by-minute predictions for the next hour and hour-by-hour forecasts for the next day and week.

The same technology that powers Dark Sky’s predictions also allows us to make the world’s first perfectly smooth radar animation. Other apps show you a chunky slideshow that makes it nearly impossible to tell how storms are moving. But Dark Sky’s radar animation lets you see the actual path of the storm: how it moved in the past, and where it’s going in the future.

Dark Sky comes with advanced notification options: Receive down-to-the-minute alerts before it starts raining at your exact location, get notified of government severe weather alerts (for such things as thunderstorms, flooding, hurricanes, etc), or even create your own custom notifications covering the next 24 hours for things like temperature, wind, precipitation and more. Even if you haven't opened the app in days, Dark Sky will tell you what you need to know, when you need to know it.

The Dark Sky Notification Center Widget tells you at a glance what's going to happen in the next hour, so you don't even have to unlock your phone to quickly check the weather before heading out.

Dark Sky looks great on your wrist. Get notifications and check out the weather for the next week with the Dark Sky app built from scratch for Apple Watch.

Customer Reviews

Overall a terrific weather app

I went from using multiple free weather applications to finally giving in and purchasing this about three months ago. I did so based on reviews and haven't regretted it since. Dark Sky is simplistic in its design and use and is easy to understand. Thanks to the recent update, you get even more information than just on when precipitation (i.e. rain or snow) will occur. The forecasts it gives are pretty accurate and I like the fact that Dark Sky relies on its own computer-oriented weather forecasting system. The app is literally like having your own weather station on your phone or tablet.

The best part is the recent update which includes an hour-by-hour forecast feature and a manner in which people can report on rain or other bad weather conditions in their area. The phone and tablet widgets are great and I find them very helpful. Dark Sky is a simple, easy to use weather app whose developers not only listen to their customers but strive to be the best.

Well-done Watch App

I decided to purchase Dark Sky as a replacement for Wunderground a few days ago. I'm happy to report that I like the app, but I'm not sure that it works as a complete replacement. The app requires full-time access to location services and background refresh for weather alerts. In doing so, I noticed that it literally "always" uses location services. This just destroys my battery life. I was surprised it didn't just refresh every hour or there weren't configurable options around this setting (like being able to choose which alerts you want to receive in Wunderground). The watch app is where we excel, though. It is quick and shows enough detail to be useful. The only suggestion I have is to make the smallest watch complication display the current conditions along with the temperature like Wunderground. I absolutely must have that before I can switch. Temperature is nice but that isn't quite enough information for me and I don't want to replace a larger complication.

My main weather app

I've used many different weather apps since the first gen iPhone, and Dark Sky has easily become my main weather app. I love the interface and layout, and the ability to report the current weather conditions if they vary from the app is a nice feature. But most importantly, I find it to be highly accurate (for me anyway) when it comes to the current and near-future weather conditions...the rain notifications are almost eerily accurate and I'm convinced there's some kind of sorcery involved. Beyond a few days the accuracy falters a bit, but no worse than any of the other weather apps (Florida weather can be highly unpredictable).
I don't have a watch, so I can't comment on that functionality.
