Dark Sky - Hyperlocal Weather, Radar, and Storm Alerts

Essentials

Description

Dark Sky can tell you at a glance exactly when it will rain (or snow) up to an hour in advance, so you’re free to walk the dog or run out to lunch and know you’ll stay dry. You can also explore the most beautiful weather animation you’ve ever seen, both forward in time or back.

(Dark Sky is available in the US, UK and Ireland.)

YOUR WEATHER, DOWN TO THE MINUTE
Using GPS, Dark Sky is able to create forecasts for your precise location, giving you minute-by-minute predictions for the next hour and hour-by-hour forecasts for the next day and week.

BEAUTIFUL WEATHER ANIMATIONS
The same technology that powers Dark Sky’s predictions also allows us to make the world’s first perfectly smooth radar animation. Other apps show you a chunky slideshow that makes it nearly impossible to tell how storms are moving. But Dark Sky’s radar animation lets you see the actual path of the storm: how it moved in the past, and where it’s going in the future.

PUSH NOTIFICATIONS
Dark Sky comes with advanced notification options: Receive down-to-the-minute alerts before it starts raining at your exact location, get notified of government severe weather alerts (for such things as thunderstorms, flooding, hurricanes, etc), or even create your own custom notifications covering the next 24 hours for things like temperature, wind, precipitation and more. Even if you haven't opened the app in days, Dark Sky will tell you what you need to know, when you need to know it.

TODAY WIDGET
The Dark Sky Notification Center Widget tells you at a glance what's going to happen in the next hour, so you don't even have to unlock your phone to quickly check the weather before heading out.

APPLE WATCH
Dark Sky looks great on your wrist. Get notifications and check out the weather for the next week with the Dark Sky app built from scratch for Apple Watch.

Great App!!

This app is one of my favorites. I use it all time and then I got the Apple Watch and it works too - nothing like the full blown app. The radar seems like it is a must (after years) but truth is it seems like more of a distraction and app slow down. Thank god the devices got faster - it appears the app has continued to improve on the soul merit of its speed. I said "it appears like..." Unlike other apps the "precipitation timeline" is a great visual but it is counterintuitive because of the choice of colors. Not a cloud in the sky is grey and pouring all day is solid blue. The % chance of precipitation everyday is around 50% - I get it I live in the Midwest. It would be nice to have an awake forecast. Who cares if 100% of the time it rains between 2 and 4 AM; what is the forecast between 7:00-22:00! That might be a nice configurable option. I know this app is called "Dark Sky" but it would be nice to look ahead to the weekend and feel positive and not NON-NEGATIVE. The time and duration of the short term precipitation seems to work conspicuously well. VERY COOL!

I loved it but...

I am a weather app addict. Don't ask me why, but I collect them and compare the nuances of each app. Dark Sky is a fun app but it crashes a lot and the weather forecasts are not always accurate. It is supposed to be drizzling outside according to Dark Sky right now but the sun is actually shining. It definitely has a lot potential but needs work.

I really tried to like this app. It was highly recommended in online articles that I read. I do like the little sound-chime-alert that lets me know it is about to rain. My all time favorite weather app for planning my day, walking my dogs, whether to go to the store or M wait-out a thunder storm before racing to the car is WEATHER BUG!!!! I was lucky enough to get Weather Bug while I could buy the upgrade to eliminate advertisements. I think Weather Bug has switched back to the ad only model now unfortunately. I keep my upgrade version in my easy to find screen on my phone. It would be nice if these two app developers would hook up and merge their products. Weather Bug is way more accurate but Dark Sky is more fun. 😏

5 Stars iPhone, 2 Stars Apple Watch

This app is great and pretty accurate. The iPhone app is my favorite weather app. The Apple Watch app is good but complications do not update often enough. I travel a lot and am often in 2 or 3 different major cities a day. For instance I left Atlanta a few hours ago and am in New York City now. I've been here 30 minutes and the complication on the watch face still shows Atlanta's forecast even after opening the app on the watch and getting the New York weather. If the developers fix this it's easily 5 stars. Disappointing on the watch because I can never tell if the complication is showing weather for where I am now or for where I've been. Even after I open the app on both my phone and watch it's not updating. It will eventually update but seems like it should update itself as soon as it recognizes that I'm in a new place. Kind of defeats the purpose of having it on the watch when it doesn't update and I don't know if it's accurate.
