Dark Sky Weather
Open iTunes to buy and download apps.
Dark Sky can tell you at a glance exactly when it will rain (or snow) up to an hour in advance, so you’re free to walk the dog or run out to lunch and know you’ll stay dry. You can also explore the most beautiful weather animation you’ve ever seen, both forward in time or back.
(Dark Sky is available in the US, UK and Ireland.)
YOUR WEATHER, DOWN TO THE MINUTE
Using GPS, Dark Sky is able to create forecasts for your precise location, giving you minute-by-minute predictions for the next hour and hour-by-hour forecasts for the next day and week.
BEAUTIFUL WEATHER ANIMATIONS
The same technology that powers Dark Sky’s predictions also allows us to make the world’s first perfectly smooth radar animation. Other apps show you a chunky slideshow that makes it nearly impossible to tell how storms are moving. But Dark Sky’s radar animation lets you see the actual path of the storm: how it moved in the past, and where it’s going in the future.
Dark Sky comes with advanced notification options: Receive down-to-the-minute alerts before it starts raining at your exact location, get notified of government severe weather alerts (for such things as thunderstorms, flooding, hurricanes, etc), or even create your own custom notifications covering the next 24 hours for things like temperature, wind, precipitation and more. Even if you haven't opened the app in days, Dark Sky will tell you what you need to know, when you need to know it.
The Dark Sky Notification Center Widget tells you at a glance what's going to happen in the next hour and the next week, so you don't even have to unlock your phone to quickly check the weather before heading out.
Dark Sky looks great on your wrist. Get notifications and check out the weather for the next week with the Dark Sky app built from scratch for Apple Watch.
What's New in Version 5.2.7
- Squashed some widget UI glitches
- In the timeline, snow is now a different color from rain to help differentiate the two
- Fixed the next-hour wobbly graph on iPhone 7 and iPad Pro
- Fixed notification sound effect
- More aggressively clearing map cache to keep app size reasonable
- Watch-not-updating-properly fixes
This weather app CONSTANTLY changes its forecast. So it gives you almost no idea what is actually correct and no clue what the weather will really be like in a few hours much less the next day. I have seen it go from snow to rain to clear for the following day forecasts and temperatures change from 28 degrees to end up at like 50 degrees. I think this program uses innacurate computer models that rerun themselves constantly to keep updating the app. This way it's somewhat correct about 1 minute into the future. Even that isn't right 50% of the time.
As other people have mentioned it also quit working correctly on the Apple Watch and is usually horribly out of date or just displays ------- for the weather. Additionally if you are going to use location alerts it wants you to turn on GPS full time which will drain your phone battery like crazy.
I personally think "Storm" by weather underground is a much better app. It doesn't do some of the claimed features Dark Sky has (which don't work anyway 90% of the time) but does seem to give consistent forecasts and has some other features like the ability to draw on the map and to draw distances from storms to know how far away they are. As well as the ability to create a home warning ring at a set distance to warn you of whatever weather you specify. This way you don't need to use the phones GPS constantly either.
Accurate, useful, beautiful: AWESOME
Edit: Devs, please consider adding an awesome *timer* on the chart page -- this option could be set to alert a user when the rain stops, for example.
On my home screen, Dark Sky is pretty perfect for the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State, where I reside. Because it does rain here as you may have heard, and the weather is changeable most of the year.
This weather app allows me to time my runs, walks, yardwork, bicycle rides -- you get the picture, and that is the especially important in this land of tall trees and rushing water. Water is a prime consideration here is what I'm saying.
Dark Sky has been stunningly accurate over the past 3 years. Today was an especially off-and-on rain day, and I monitored the app throughout. It was spot-on in both length and intensity.
Also I like the look and feel of this app compared to most of the boring or too-slick others. It's fun to play with the radar animation on the globe, and useful to get push alerts for "heavy rain".
Kudos to the developers. Well worth the price. On my first screen. A public service. Support excellence.
Edit: Although the chances of rain always shows and is very spot-on, increasingly and randomly the chart is not shown and it says "Radar station down." in this area. Is the National Weather Service really that spotty? Please check into this, devs, in my area. Thank you.
Best Weather App Available!
I have been using Dark Sky now for approximately 3 years or more. I've been sent multiple requests from multiple other weather apps asking me to please try them out and I always give them a fair shot. I typically wind up deleting them within approximately a week. I must say that not one of these apps have ever come anywhere close to the quality and accuracy that you will get with the Dark Sky app. It's accuracy with even the notifications that it will begin to rain soon, or that the rain will be stopping soon. This app is so clean, on point, and just so well done that I am certain there is not a single thing that could be improved upon. Thank you Dark Sky for bringing us an app that is not overly-done or jammed full of annoying ads. Truly the best weather app available in the Apple App Market to date.
