Dark Sky - Weather Radar, Hyperlocal Forecasts, and Storm Alerts

By Jackadam

Open iTunes to buy and download apps.

Dark Sky can tell you at a glance exactly when it will rain (or snow) up to an hour in advance, so you’re free to walk the dog or run out to lunch and know you’ll stay dry. You can also explore the most beautiful weather animation you’ve ever seen, both forward in time or back.

(Dark Sky is available in the US, UK and Ireland.)

Using GPS, Dark Sky is able to create forecasts for your precise location, giving you minute-to-minute predictions for the next hour and detailed forecasts for the next day and week.

The same technology that powers Dark Sky’s predictions also allows us to make the world’s first perfectly smooth radar animation. Other apps show you a chunky slideshow that makes it nearly impossible to tell how storms are moving. But Dark Sky’s radar animation lets you see the actual path of the storm: how it moved in the past, and where it’s going in the future.

Dark Sky can send you an alert before it starts raining at your exact location. Even if you haven't opened the app in days, Dark Sky will know when you're in the path of a storm.

The Dark Sky Notification Center Widget tells you at a glance what's going to happen in the next hour, so you don't even have to unlock your phone to quickly check the weather before heading out.

Dark Sky looks great on your wrist. Get notifications and check out the weather for the next five days with the Dark Sky app built from scratch for Apple Watch.

What's New in Version 4.3.4

This one's a tiny little update:

1) Tweaks to the Today Widget (it now shows actual temperature rather than Feels-Like temperature, and I've removed the "Open in Dark Sky" button since everyone knows you can just tap the widget to launch the app).

2) Apple Watch bug fixes.

Customer Reviews

Overall a terrific weather app

I went from using multiple free weather applications to finally giving in and purchasing this about three months ago. I did so based on reviews and haven't regretted it at all. Dark Sky is simplistic in its design and use and is easy to understand. You get a lot of the same information with the free apps but this is geared toward giving updated information on precipitation (i.e. rain or snow). The forecasts it gives are pretty accurate and I like the fact that Dark Sky relies on its own computer-oriented weather forecasting system. The app is literally like having your own weather station on your phone or tablet.

I hope at some point developers can make an hour-by-hour forecast feature along with storm intensity and include a manner in which people can report on rain or other bad weather conditions in their area. Aside from this, the phone and tablet widgets are great and I find them very helpful. Dark Sky is a simple, easy to use weather app with a few flaws but nothing serious.

Promises miracles, delivers good immediate forecasts.

Bought this app because I don't own a car, so knowing if it will rain before I go out is quite useful. The storm alert feature is near-perfect, there are occasions where I don't get an alert (or only get it once it's started pouring), and the immediate short-term forecast is very accurate for the next ten minutes or so. But weather forecasting ain't perfect, and it shows: I've had times where rain was forecast for the next hour, and then fifteen minutes later, the rain had stopped (or more annoyingly, vice versa). To be fair, the app updates to reflect that, and you can't expect a weather forecasting tool to be guaranteed 100% of the time. Could use some additional features, I would love hourly forecasts for wind/humidity/etc. and better maps.

Nice but maps are lacking in detail

Overall I like this app. One thing that would change my rating from 4 stars to 5 would be better maps underlying the radar display. The maps are fine for checking the weather at your current location, since it shows your location with a pin - but if you're traveling and want to see if it's raining at your destination, it's too hard to precisely locate your destination on the map (since it only shows major highways and rivers). Would be much better if the app overlaid the radar on the standard Apple maps so you could zoom in to street-level detail.
