Dark Sky - Weather Radar, Hyperlocal Forecasts, and Storm Alerts

By Jackadam

Open iTunes to buy and download apps.

Dark Sky can tell you at a glance exactly when it will rain (or snow) up to an hour in advance, so you’re free to walk the dog or run out to lunch and know you’ll stay dry. You can also explore the most beautiful weather animation you’ve ever seen, both forward in time or back.

(Dark Sky is available in the US, UK and Ireland.)

Using GPS, Dark Sky is able to create forecasts for your precise location, giving you minute-by-minute predictions for the next hour and hour-by-hour forecasts for the next day and week.

The same technology that powers Dark Sky’s predictions also allows us to make the world’s first perfectly smooth radar animation. Other apps show you a chunky slideshow that makes it nearly impossible to tell how storms are moving. But Dark Sky’s radar animation lets you see the actual path of the storm: how it moved in the past, and where it’s going in the future.

Dark Sky comes with advanced notification options: Receive down-to-the-minute alerts before it starts raining at your exact location, get notified of government severe weather alerts (for such things as thunderstorms, flooding, hurricanes, etc), or even create your own custom notifications covering the next 24 hours for things like temperature, wind, precipitation and more. Even if you haven't opened the app in days, Dark Sky will tell you what you need to know, when you need to know it.

The Dark Sky Notification Center Widget tells you at a glance what's going to happen in the next hour, so you don't even have to unlock your phone to quickly check the weather before heading out.

Dark Sky looks great on your wrist. Get notifications and check out the weather for the next week with the Dark Sky app built from scratch for Apple Watch.

I've been using the iPhone for years and years and this weather app is the best by far! I've been using this app also for years and it has never let me down. It's simple to navigate it's well designed it's just a beautiful app all around. I love all the new settings that came with the latest update. So what this app does is amazing it will let you know the weather minute by minute not only that it will let you know how bad the weather is going to be minute by minute. I don't know how many times I've checked the weather using this app before I leave my house and it says heavy rain starting in 10 minutes and sure enough 10 minutes later its raining cats and dogs. I have recommended this weather app to everyone I know that has a iOS device and they all absolutely love it. They really hit the ball out of the ball park with this one! Can't wait to see how this app evolves in the future. Last thing the price is a little high but you can catch it on sale if you check from time to time right now I believe the price is 3.99 and it's worth every penny best money you'll spend at the App Store.

Walking in the rain no more

This is one of the few third party apps that has made it into my first page of apps on my iPhone and stayed over time.

I appreciate greatly that they brought back the chart for rain in the next hour to the app. The app has gone from 4 back to 5 starts for me. This is my most used feature! living in tropical weather it's a godsend when one needs to decide if one needs to wait a few minutes for the rain to get light or go into the pouring rain ready w an umbrella. While I think the feature has not worked as great as before predicting rain to the minute of stopping; it still works great and the developers clearly want to please the customers. Overall great app!

Original best feature now worthless

This is an attractive weather app for temperatures and sunrise/sunset times for anyone who cares about it. But older versions were all about accurately telling you about precipitation. The new layout, though pretty, hides this information--and in my experience over the past week, when you do find it, it's wrong. We've had several rainy days where I live, yet no matter how much it's raining now, Dark Sky always say there'll be light rain in a few hours. I wonder if the developers lost the ability to use whatever data source used to work so well for precipitation. The app has so little confidence in its predictive capabilities that the Glance provided on the Apple Watch doesn't even mention precipitation, as far as I can tell.
