External, non-boot drives that show up in Disk Utility, but will not mount can be recovered with Data Rescue 3 External Drive Recovery. If you've deleted files from an external, non-boot drive, you can use Data Rescue 3 External Drive Recovery to scan that drive to find previously-deleted files.

Data Rescue 3 EDR cannot recover an ethernet or wifi-connected hard drive. Network Drives can have various file systems on them (HFS+, Linux, etc) and Data Rescue does not support all these file systems. It is recommended that you download the Data Rescue 3 demo from our website to scan your network drive (which must be connected via FireWire or USB) to see if Data Rescue can see the files on it.

Do you feel lucky?

Apparently when this app works, it works great. But when it doesn't work, it doesn't work at all. New Seagate external hard drive stopped mounting, disk utility said it was a hardware problem (as did other rescue software). Based on reviews, I thought I'd give Data Rescue a shot.

Launched DR3 and it tries to index drive (great)! DR3 then warns of slow read times on drive, and possible drive failure, via pop-up window. Suggests quitting and cloning (through some other software evidently). Great suggestion except there's no way to stop the indexing - quitting DR3 did not work, and there are only 3 interface buttons. No option to pause index or stop. Pop-up keeps returning until it too finally locks up. Had to Force Quit.

Shut everything down, restarted, same result. So my drive is dead, but this version of DR3 lacks basic controls and options for dead drives. Maybe the full version is better, but am unlikely to throw more money to Prosoft right now. If other diagnostics indicate hardware failure, be very skeptical of any recovery claims.

Nice job

Organized recovered files well and it provides the ability to search the files… the big downside, no file names if you reformatted the drive or are recovering deleted items, but if I understand correctly, this is more of technical trait of OSX than it is any problem with the software. I was seraching for lost photos and the vast majority of our photos were given names associated with the date they were taken, which made it easier to go through the several thousand files available for recover. Took about a day to catalog the 1.3 TB of unused space on the drive I ran it on. Overally, this seems like a well implemented tool that is priced well with its competition, although $60 hurts no matter how you slice it… I really like the ability to preview files before recovering them…. that's awesome.

This is an great product

Data Rescue has helped me twice. Last year a friend's hard drive crashed and he did not have a backup. I happened to stumble on Data Rescue and it was able to recover all of his data. The second time it helped me was last night. I thought that I imported photos from a SD card to my friend's computer. After doing that, I formatted the SD card using the camera's format function. Then, when I looked on the computer, the photos never transferred. I thought that I lost 320 photos that included a Thanksgiving vacation, Christmas vacation, and lots of family photos. I inserted the SD card in my iMac running Data Rescue and within 15 minutes, it had recovered the JPEG files and I was able to transfer them to my friend's computer. Thanks Data Rescue. Jay Stewart
